    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Inititally, I was somewhat frustrated about the operational, day to day nature of my work. However, after a while of warming up to the office environment and the complexity of the energy industry, I started really enjoying my role. With the projects I was given later on in my placement, my work became less operational and I was given lots of responsibility within my team. The process of getting to know a complex industry from the inside was interesting and even though I would not count the energy industry as my passion, it was a great experience to learn about its many different facettes.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • After a period of building knowledge about the industry, the company, and our team's processes, I was given meaningful projects and tasks. I learned to actively approach managers and coworkers for projects and work which went a long way. Even the first few research projects I did to get my head around the industry were valued by my colleages, as I was approached even towards the end of my placement to go over the things I looked at. As a result, I felt like a trusted and valued member of my team throughout my placement.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given excellent support and guidance by my managers and supervisors. My manager throughout my placement had regular catchups with me to see how I am getting on and adjusted my work load accordingly. In times where I was frustrated with the operational nature of my role, I communicated this with my manager, line manager and even the team's director, who all took my feedback to heart and gave me more project based work.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Towards the beginning of my placement, I felt like I could have had more work throughout my day. However, once I fed this back to my managers, my workload was increased to my liking and when my more meaningful projects kicked off, I had a great balance of workload on a daily basis.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In the first few months of my placement, I felt like I did not have enough responsibility, as my role was highly operational. I communicated this to my managers and as a result, I was given meaningul projects to lead. All my projects and even my day to day work provided transparency to not only senior management, but even directors of the company. In my operational job, I settled millions of pounds worth of invoices on a weekly basis. On top of that, I really felt that my major projects had an impact, with senior managers using my work and findings to present to their superiors and other teams across the business. Overall I am really happy with the responsibility I was given throughout my placement.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed and the training I received will certainly assist me in my further studies and later work life. Trainings received: - several introductory online courses on the energy industry - Two day financial modelling course (held in Germany): This course greatly enhances my professional skillset and will help open doors in my future Key skills learned: - General office etiquette and professionalism - Self reflection: This to me is one of the main learnings I took away from my placement. Reflecting on my work and sharing my reflections with my managers greatly improved my placement experience. - Networking: I made many valuable contacts and learned how to approach people, even of senior and director level management. - Leadership: I was given the opportunity to take lead on major projects. - Teamwork and collaboration: In my projects, I collaborated with teams from all across the business.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Being in a rather lively team, I never felt like I was on my own or did not have anyone to talk to and I enjoyed a rather chatty and open environment within my space. Nevertheless, there were some times during my placement were tension between colleagues dampened the office atmosphere. It also caught my attention, that, within some other teams, there seemed to be some workers, including undergraduates, that spent quite some time alone in the office.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall setup is good, as undergraduates are taken care of by HR and given plenty of opportunities. However, I felt like there was a lack of communication between HR and my team. As a result, it seemed there was no clear work plan in place for me. I believe if HR had gone over the placement hand book and the many opportunities E.ON provides for placment 西瓜视频s with line managers prior to placement 西瓜视频s starting, it would be easier for line managers to organize a schedule. Nevertheless, this enabled me to proactively form my own schedule, which ultimately turned out well for me personally.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company happily paid for travels to meetings and conferences in different locations across the United Kingdom. As part of the undergraduate program, undergraduates are also encouraged to take part in courses, all paid for by the company. I took part in a Financial Modelling Course in Germany; E.ON paid for travel, accomodation and the course. It is worth mentioning that all this was paid for during times of major cost cutting. As a result of these multiple investments into my development, I felt valued by the company.

  • Flexi Time

    International Travel

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects within E.ON are highly appealing. Undergraduates are given the opportunity of an accelerated application process for the E.ON Graduate Schemes. There are many graduate schemes across all departments, with senior mentors and many opportunities, including international placements, in place. These graduate schemes aim to attract 'leaders of the future' and there seems to be a high chance of quick career progression via these schemes.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • As I was based in the biggest E.ON office in the UK, there were many placement 西瓜视频s in the same office as me. Undergraduates in smaller offices may be less lucky here, but I experienced a good social scene. I made some close friends and also lived with some of the other undergraduates for a while. As for colleagues that weren't undergraduates, there were some social gatherings outside of work in form of lunches and dinners.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • E.ON's offices seem to generally be in locations where the cost of living is affordable. This makes it easy, even on undergraduate salary, to finance rent, gym membership and day to day requirements while also saving some money. Socially, the area of Coventry (where I was based) was not what I had hoped for, but frequent weekend trips to London combined with the money I saved thanks to the low cost of living made up for this.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Since Coventry is a very 西瓜视频y area, there are many affordable pubs in the area. However, I was disappointed with the lack of bars and clubs in the city of Coventry.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are numerous opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. However, they are poorly advertised so it is hard to know what there really is. I took part in 7-a-side football every Wednesday throughout a large chunk of my placement. It was good fun, however the downside to this was a cost of 拢5 every week.
