The Role
I very much enjoyed the work on my internship that involved getting hands on with the work as I learn best by doing. It was challenging but also very rewarding. In addition to this I got exposure to a lot of new technologies and met loads of experts in their fields who were able to guide my through my work whenever I got stuck or had any questions.
My colleagues made me feel very welcome and were always very encouraging, supportive and appreciative of every piece of work that I produced. This was not just mirrored across my immediate colleagues but also across the firm globally. At the end of the internship I had to present what I had been working on throughout my internship and all attendees seem to appreciate and thank me for the work I had done.
The support by management and supervisors here was fantastic. Goldman operates a a buddy, mentor and manager system. Your buddy you talk to about any questions you have relating to your team, your mentor is just general questions about the firm and your manager is more relating to to potential questions relating to your intern project. However, they were all happy to support me, to the best of their knowledge, with any questions or issues I had regardless if it directly related to their role or not.
Initially I was very busy completing compliance tests and quizzes but after that I was mostly left to complete my intern project with a minimum of a one meeting per week with my manager to check on my progress. I always had something to be working on but I appreciated that I was able to tackle it my own way and that I wasn't being micro-managed. Ultimately I feel I was very busy on a daily basis and that was down to how motivated I was to complete this intern project to a high standard.
My intern project consisted of two "mini" projects which would both lead to having a real impact to the firm. I was given a real responsibility of delivering a real project for a real deadline. The responsibility was perfect, in my opinion, as it was nothing that was overwhelming and intimidating but it was enough to challenge and push me every day that I was on the internship.
Being a Computer Scientist I already possessed a lot of the base knowledge that some other interns did not have. As a result I found a lot of the training to be revolving around subjects I already knew. My team therefore gave me a project which was on a technology I had not worked with before and presented exciting and challenging opportunities for me. This, in the end, led to me being able to add a new, and very relevant, skill to my list and I may even end up using it next year in my final year at University!
The Company
The atmosphere of the office was chilled but everyone was still working hard on their respective projects. It allowed me to focus on whatever task I needed to complete that day but did not stop me from being able to ask either colleague next to me if I ran into difficulties.
The internship overall was well organised. Before beginning I didn't receive information as to what I would be doing over the 10 weeks and I received one email from a member of my team a week before the internship started. Once my project was finalised everything was very well organised and put together.
The firm offered a lot of basic investment in me such as learning presentation skills, writing and also learning new skills. I feel the main bulk of my personal training and development was driven by my own team. My managers were always suggesting who I should network with and were setting up presentations for me in order to refine my skills.

The firm is a great place to work at so the future employment prospects are very appealing. Financially it is also very appealing and the fact there is potential for career progression here also adds to that. However, I feel I need to do some more research on the future direction the company could take in terms of any new technologies that may become widely used soon.
The Culture
The social scene between interns and placements was very good. We would go for drinks at least once a week and that ramped up hugely towards the beginning of the final week. People were always inviting other people to any activities they may be doing that evening/ weekend and I know that I have made plenty of friends throughout the course of this internship.
The cost of living and socialising was high but not surprisingly. Initially, before the first pay date it was very challenging as everything was effectively coming out of your own pocket. However, after that and by the time I had got used to the area and the pricing it became much easier to manage.
The nightlife in the area was good while also very expensive. It was a good way to unwind at the weekend or on a Friday. If you managed to club together enough people to go out it turned into a really fun evening. Alternatively, there are plenty of bars and pubs around if clubbing isnt your scene that are really good.
The firm was always emailing us to inform us of any activities that work employees may be organising at the weekend. I was added to a football email distribution list where I was regularly emailed about any kick abouts that were being planned in the local area at the weekend or after work.
