The Role
I really enjoyed my time working for Goldman Sachs - the work was stimulating and challenging and I was given the opportunity to contribute to real work for the desk. There is a strong culture of teamwork and cooperation and the experiences I've had will be extremely useful for further study and employment.
I was given large amounts of responsibility very soon after joining the firm and completing the training. The need to work collectively on tasks and regularly interacting with colleagues proves that you have the potential to be a valuable asset to the team, and the culture of regular feedback is incredibly useful.
The internship was incredibly thorough and well-run from the on-boarding process, to training and orientation, as well as throughout the 10 weeks. Support and guidance is consistently available and is actively encouraged - communication is also regular and the review process is very useful to identify areas where additional support and guidance is required
I was extremely busy on a daily basis throughout the course of the internship. The flow of work was continuous and when you can prove to others that you're capable of performing a task well then the workload increases also. In order to produce work of a high standard it was necessary to spend lots of time researching and preparing materials, while making sure the work was accurate and fit for purpose.
I was given lots of responsibility for each of the various teams I worked with throughout the course of the internship. In order to be a real asset to the desk, I worked hard to do the simple tasks to a high standard in order to be given more challenging pieces of work or projects. This is especially important to ensure your team trusts you to do a good job and deliver work promptly to set deadlines.
The skills I've acquired throughout the internship will be invaluable for my degree studies and beyond. Not only have I learnt techniques to become more productive, but also time management and other soft skills that will help me with my studies and in future employment. I have also acquired a wealth of financial knowledge that will be applicable to my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere and culture is one of hard work and intellectual curiosity, but my colleagues for the summer always made themselves available to answer questions or help with any issues. Everyone is highly motivated to deliver a high calibre of work for their clients and for each other and the atmosphere is incredibly collaborative.
The company was highly invested in delivering really good quality training that was applicable in my day-to-day duties throughout the internship. Not only did we have a full week at the start of the program dedicated to training and orientation, but there were also various workshop and skill sessions held over the course of the internship focusing on sales techniques and presenting to clients among other useful experiences.

Future employment prospects are very appealing. The firm engages with such a wide array of different businesses on a global scale and the nature of the work is constantly evolving, so looking to the future there are exciting prospects in various areas of the firm. Internal mobility is also encouraged and people frequently move within divisions with the onus on finding a good fit wherever you choose to work.
The Culture
I was fortunate to be part of a great intern class and the social scene was really good. We would frequently meet up for drinks after work and socialize over the weekend, which balanced with the sometimes long hours in the office. I really enjoyed going out with fellow members of my team and felt welcome to join their social events after work throughout my placement.
We took part in a Community Teamworks project, compulsory for all staff on an annual basis, to take time out of the office and help provide social benefit to supported charities and organisations. We spent a full day out helping to clean a small section of the Thames with help from a charitable organisation in order to make a difference to the local environment. The firm is also very conscious of its ESG status and takes pride in the various schemes it offers.
