The Role
The start of the internship was very tough as its is an incredibly intense process due to the rotational nature of it. This means that the first few weeks you're finding your feet, however after that you can make the most of the process. You get to see lots of desks, meet a lot of people and by the end it was an incredibly enjoyable experience.
The people I worked with were one of the key reasons I enjoyed the internship. Everyone is incredibly motivated, and they are all keen to pass on the knowledge they have about their job. Everyone pushes you but they are also always there and will dedicate time to allow you to learn and are fundamentally nice people.
A lot of information is given to you throughout the internship from buddies, HCM and people you meet. All of this information and guidance gives you a method to navigate the internship, and if you need any more advice people are always willing to give you some. HCM are also always available to help you.
Very busy. The desks give you a lot of work to do, and there is always work to be done if you ask for it. At no point was I waiting to be given something to do, and if you were you could easily find people to give you projects. Sometimes it can get too much but you have to balance expectations.
Because of regulation you cannot actually complete any meaningful work for the desks, especially for trading desks. Because of this the majority of the work i was given was projects set by the desks to give you a reason to talk to the team and learn about what they do. These do not add value and therefore you do not have much responsibility.
This internship has been a test of time management, teamwork and communication. Even though you need to posses these skills to get a place on the internship, they are put to the test and developed dramatically during your time here. These skills are all highly transferable to anything you end up choosing to do afterwards.
The Company
The atmosphere is hard to describe. For the internship you sit on the trading floor and there is a constant buzz and energy. This is contagious and allows you to work to work to the best of your potential. It is also very dedicated so I would not describe it as a party, however the people are relaxed and enjoy themselves still.
The placement is very well organised. The first few weeks are all training to allow you to build an understanding of the work that goes on and the products that are traded, and this is strictly scheduled. As the internship progresses you submit preferences for desks you want to work on and then HCM try to match the interns to the appropriate desks. Everything ran very smoothly.
The first few weeks involved a couple of days of dedicated training, which was very useful to get me up to speed. They also put on a lot of question and answer sessions which were of mixed value. After these few weeks the training involved was all from learning from people at the desks rather than dedicated training sessions.

The whole point of the internship from the company perspective is to use it as an extended interview. Over the ten weeks they get a good idea as to whether you would fit in the organisation and in a specific team. If they believe that this is the case then there will be job opportunities for you, however if they do not then there wont be - just like a normal interview.
The Culture
The interns I worked with were all like minded, dedicated people who wanted to work hard, but also to enjoy themselves. Because there were so many of us it meant that there were always people to talk to during the day and go out with at night if you wanted to. My fellow interns were also one of the best parts of the internship for me.
London is expensive. There is no way to avoid this fact. My accommodation took a fair portion of my pay, however it still left me with enough to socialize and still make a bit of money from the whole process. It is also important to note that socializing in London is also very expensive, but there is no way to get around this.
I was working in central London. There are few cities in the world that offer what London can offer either during the day or at night. Directly next to the office there wasn't the best on offer by close by you had all of the choice you could want and far more!
The firm did not provide anything explicit for us to get involved with outside work. However, depending on what desk you sat on there was occasionally a drinks event or an activity you could get involved with. This was one of the weaker aspects of the internship however it is not something you work here for. There were also gym classes you could attend at the onsite gym.
