The Role
I really enjoyed my internship because it gave me the opportunity to experience what working in a demanding and fast-paced environment is like. I learnt something new each day and met and worked with many talented and interesting people. I also enjoyed working on real-time projects with my team and assisting them with their day-to-day work.
I felt valued by my colleagues for two main reasons. First, the individual project I was assigned was something that all of my team were interested to hear updates on and help with as it had links to many of their roles. Second, I increasingly became involved in my team's day-to-day tasks and towards the end of my time here, I no longer felt like a new addition but rather a valued member of the group.
At first, I was given quite minimal direction but once my project was assigned to me, I had a lot of support from all in my team. My mentor made sure to regularly schedule time with me when he was in London and gave me invaluable advice for my presentation. My buddy was also always on hand to offer advice when I needed it and we had regular catch ups to discuss my progress.
I was relatively busy on a daily basis but that was largely due to my own initiative of scheduling in catch ups with members of my team and with people elsewhere, as well as spending time making sure I completed my project to the best of my ability. My day-to-day tasks increased as the weeks went on so increasingly more of my day was filled with team related work.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility, as a result of the job I had of helping to manage one of our team's inboxes. This meant that I was emailing and phoning external clients regularly, as well as other teams in regions across the globe, for example in New York and Tokyo.
The skills I developed on my internship will greatly assist me in my degree and future career. For the former, the time management and organisation skills that I improved whilst at Goldman Sachs will be very useful for managing the large volume of work I expect to receive in the final year of my degree. The communication, drive and intellectual curiosity that this internship helped develop will also be key in any future job I have.
The Company
The general atmosphere in my office was very calm and friendly. Everyone got on well and discussed any work problems or questions in a relatively relaxed manner. The large, brightly space also contributed to the good office atmosphere.
The overall internship was extremely well organised. We were given lots of direction in our first week about how things worked, introductions to our team and general training sessions. This organisation continued throughout the 10 weeks and all the formal procedures, for example mid-term and final reviews, were handled well.
The firm invested a lot in my personal training and development. This was achieved in a number of ways. First, the numerous sessions that were put on by HCM gave us a good understanding of our divisions and areas within it. Second, the smaller group sessions with VPs and MDs gave us an opportunity to ask any specific questions we had about improving our own skills. Third, everyone in the firm was willing to take the time to talk to us and give feedback, which was very useful to my personal development.

Future employment prospects within the organisation are very appealing. Goldman Sachs would be an incredible pace to work because of the opportunities it offers its employees. The people you meet, the travel that is possible, the challenges that you face on a daily basis and the chance of mobility all make the firm an appealing place to start a career.
The Culture
There was a good social scene within the intern class. Every week there were people going our for drinks after work and sometimes we organised events over the weekends. During the day, we often coordinated lunch when we could and catch ups to see how each one of us was getting on.
The cost was quite expensive because it is central London but that was to be expected. Also, you could bring in food for lunch and snacks due to the on sight kitchens, which saved me a lot of money on food. Going out for drinks after work was the most expensive cost in terms of socialising.
The nightlife was very good due to its central location in London. There was also a lot of options depending one what you felt like doing, whether it be one drink after work or cocktails somewhere further afield.
There were a few opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work. The firm has lots of affinity networks which are open to all and these groups put on regular events, that range from volunteering for homeless charities and going out for drinks with other similar networks from other banks.
