    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The opportunity to teach in a school and directly try out different methods of teaching was an excellent way to see if teaching was for you. The first week of the programme was a little spread out and could have been condensed and I would have liked more differentiation for participants dependent on whether they were going to be teaching in a primary or secondary school, as it would have been easier to learn methods of teaching if this was separated

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • All the staff were very friendly (except one who after another group presenting and going through who should win the best group, forgot about that group and said that they "wouldn't have won anyway" which seemed rude and demotivating). However the rest of the staff were helpful and having guest speakers who had taken time out of their professions to come talk to us made me feel welcoming

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The guidance we received was good and I felt like I could go and talk to Chrissy or Emma if I had any questions. During the second week in the school we received guidance from the head teacher and the class teacher especially who supported me in planning my lesson

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It will help me to decide whether I would get on with the LDP and receiving information from people who had done the LDP will inform my decision. I also learnt about presenting and leadership which I can apply to my studies and career in the future

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The structure was good, I liked how we learned skills in the first week and in the second could apply them to our own teaching. The days were quite long as we had to travel 1 hour to get to the resource center to sign in for 8:30 but the sessions were mostly informative and engaging

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Every participant was friendly, and so were the staff which made it a nice place to be. I liked how everyone was passionate about teaching and I had like minded people to talk to about it. I also liked the socials however think it would have been better in the next door Spoons. These socials however were quite segregated in terms of staff to participants and I thought the staff would want to mingle with us more so we could talk to them more casually to get some insider tips! But it was a lovely atmosphere overall, and I made some great friends who I have met up with since!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I think TeachFirst invested quite a lot in me as they provided us with comprehensive sessions in the aim of developing important skills such as leadership. They also helped us to self-reflect which is an important tool. They also invested in us in terms of the assessment feedback which we received which is rare in large companies/ charities like Teachfirst. So I would say they invested a lot!!

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I would like to know more about the Summer Institute as I think we got a feel of what it would be like from the 1st week at the Resource Center and from teachers who had done the LDP at our placement schools. However, as TeachFirst is changing the programme and making the summer institute more tightly packed than before I would have liked to have seen the difference between this and the Insight programme outlined to us. It was great that we got to go into a Teachfirst school as this is where would be teaching and may differ to our own school experiences so this prepared me and gave me an insight into the LDP and Teachfirst as a job

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • We experienced lots of different talks from those who had done the LDP aswell as those who were ambassadors and had gone on to develop new ventures for the teachfirst group. This gave us a feel of the culture and values of the charity and how invested different people feel in the aim of ending educational disadvantage. It was great to see that those who had done the LDP still believed as strongly as they had when they started.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The first week we had lots of different sessions including talks from various ambassadors who had moved on from teaching which for many participants was helpful as it made them aware of what opportunities were available after teachfirst however for me I am very set on teaching and so this didn't particularly help me to decide on my career path. Nevertheless the second week helped me to decide that primary teaching was for me!

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We were not reimbursed travel or food but paid 拢250 per week

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • During the socials with the staff we did not have the opportunity to talk to them as they were just talking amongst themselves. However during the talks at the resource center we could ask questions to the ambassadors or talk to them at the end. At the placement school I could talk to 2 current employees (LDP participants) which was helpful to gain an insight into their experiences within the company

    4/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The social opportunities consisted of an evening at the pub, which was okay

    3/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Employees discussed the different options for summer projects that we could do throughout our time on the LDP or even afterwards! We also had talks on the different initiatives that teachfirst ambassadors have created that many employees are a part of and how we could develop our own ideas and present them to the board if they fit with the culture and values of the company

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Overall I think it was a great experience and I met lots of lovely people who were similar in terms of values to my own. It was good that we also got paid for our time as it made us feel valued for our time and effort. I liked the second week and getting the chance to teach our own class which we would not have normally been able to do. The first week could have been more condensed but overall the sessions were informative and helped me to be a better teacher and person
