The Role
I didn't enjoy the actual content of my work, however I enjoyed the learning opportunities and other factors of the firm's culture. The opportunities available were very unique to the firm.
The environment was generally very open and friendly; most people, regardless of their rank, encourage and support you throughout your time at the firm. It's a very positive culture.
GS are highly invested in their people; everyone is more than willing to give up time in their busy day to help you. I had a number of formal and informal mentors that gave me guidance and advice throughout the year. The firm also offers a system of training opportunities for continuous learning.
Most of the time I was extremely busy - the workload at GS is comparatively high and the firm is known for this.
I ran a department wide initiative in London and was able to expand it to other locations in Europe - opportunities such as this (as well as others) gave me a great chance to have ownership over a project.
Due to the high level of responsibility, high pressured environment and high standard of achievement expected at GS, you naturally gain a great number of skills to a highly developed level. The learning experience is second to none.
The Company
Over the initial summer period it's quite positive: there are a wide variety of intern related events to get involved in and a large number of people join the firm during that time (new grads, summer interns and work placements). As a result, there are a lot of opportunities for networking and enthusiasm is high. After September the summer interns leave and the atmosphere steps up in intensity. It becomes far more serious.
The structure of the work placement, from the quarterly review system, to the content of the work you were given was very well set up. The 6 month rotation is not as smooth as it could be however, and it isn't consistent across all teams/departments.
The firm is very invested in training/development: you have the opportunity to attend talks from high profile individuals (from athletes to entrepreneurs) and senior leaders at the firm, to educational sessions on financial knowledge and also career development opportunities. The firm does a great job with this.

Future employment prospects are subject to your division/department. You also don't find out until months after your placement ends.
The Culture
There isn't a significant social culture within my department or division. Especially over winter; over summer however this picks up and there is more of a social eagerness.
London is generally very expensive - my area was also heavily corporate. Good deals can be found online however.
Some good bars and good access to other areas but generally not much around my office specifically.
A large number of extra curricular activities, from affinity networks, to sports clubs and volunteering.
