The Role
The placement was at times fulfilling and enjoyable, but for long periods it seemed as though there was very little planning or focus that had gone into my placement and very little structure had been set out for me to follow and work within.
My value was never really questioned and I didn't feel like I was an accessory to the team. My tasks were sometimes boring and I was sometimes left feeling underestimated in what I could do for the team.
My actual manager offered virtually 0 support, and instead relied on my other senior manager to manage me. I wasn't aware of this until half way through my placement really and I didn't feel like my manager cared too much about me as he was very busy for a lot of the time. My other manager was much more involved and seemed to be genuinely bothered that I was okay. However, there were times that I was not guided at all and left to my own devices when everyone else was together working.
I was as busy as I wanted to be, and it was very much a case of ask for more if you want more. I had spells of hectic deadlines but generally I was quite underworked with very slow paced tasks.
More responsibility than most and I was able to take forward my own ideas and propositions. However, when push came to shove my project was handed over to a senior manager where it never saw the light of day again which was frustrating
Excel skills improved, presentation skills improved, analytical skill were tested. I hope they will assist me in the future but I do feel a lot of the work I have done was quite role specific
The Company
Awful. Silent for extensive periods. For a team that is supposed to be dynamic and creative there was a feeling that everyone was afraid of their own shadows or that no one really liked one another. Either way it was quite uncomfortable but for the occasional joke.
Not at all really. Very much ad hoq on how work was given. I had to set up EOY reviews and never was offered formal progress updates.
The company is very inconsistent in its funding as I was contracted to have 3 paid training days, but ended with only 1 Also some interns were able to go to Germany a lot, but I was never funded to go.
Flexi Time
Working from home
Very good if you get on the grad scheme, but you have to want to work for E.ON to do that which is a whole other argument.
The Culture
The saving grace of the placement. There is a strong community with the interns and you all quickly become friends
Awful area, one of the interns had a wheel stolen from his car from a neighbour. definitely worth living a bit further away. But relatively cheap housing - 拢400pcm
One or two clubs, but Birmingham and Leamington Spa are close enough!
A local gym and football clubs were present but not communicated through the office too much
