    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the firm. Whilst intense, I can hardly imagine that there is a better insight programme out there. The programme offers the perfect mixture of training, speaker sessions and 'floor experience', meaning that you truly get an overall impression of the firm and its culture, and of your chosen division. All GS staff did their utmost to make us feel comfortable, while simultaneously and gradually getting us out of our comfort zone, too. All training and speaker sessions were very informative and interactive.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • The firm took great care of us, and is truly willing to invest in their interns. The people at the firm stood out most to me. Whilst going to an institution like GS as a first year 西瓜视频 can be daunting, everyone did their utmost to make us feel welcome and valuable. From day one you are made to feel like an actual Goldman employee, and never was I made to feel like 'just a spring intern'. From day three my team took me to meetings where I was often the only intern in the room, and whilst this might seem daunting at first, I truly enjoyed it. In the hallways, staff members (from junior to senior) stop you for a chat or to check up on you. There is a great emphasis on networking, and you are encouraged to arrange for coffee meetings with GS staff. Initially, this feels rather strange ('Why would they want to spend 30 min of their busy day with me, a first year university 西瓜视频?'), but no one minds at all and they are all very accommodating, such is the culture at GS. Altogether, this made me, once again, feel valued by the firm.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • During the insight, guidance will mostly be provided by three main sources: 1) The two HCM representatives (HRM), who were a 'one stop shop' for all practical questions, and were always very fast, complete and friendly in their responses, before and during the programme. Additionally, they were always available to help us with any questions/issue we might have had. In week two, we had a one-on-one meeting which was hugely helpful as they provided us with personalised feedback and tips. 2) The programme champions: they are two permanent staff members who will be present at many of the scheduled activities, including the evening socials. Again, they emphasises their availability for any questions whatsoever. 3) Your team members on the desk, incl. your buddy: even though my buddy was going through a particularly busy period, support was also provided by the members of my team on the desk. I was very fortunate in that I got along extremely well with every single one of them, and I really felt looked after. Everyone, ranging from the analysts over my manager to a partner overseeing the team, was happy to organise meetings or grab lunch/coffee together. I particularly enjoyed this combination of formal and informal settings.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The programme has a rather steep learning curve. Open to 西瓜视频s from all degrees, the assumption is that you have zero finance knowledge. In the first week, there are thus 'refresher/introduction' training sessions on the world of finance. Even though my course is finance-related, these sessions were very useful. In general, the insight sort of brought to life the theory I have been learning in university, which is a great feeling. Furthermore, I would say the skill I personally improved most, would be networking. As mentioned above, there is a huge emphasis on this, and whilst this might feel uncomfortable at first, the firm's culture does a great job at making you completely comfortable with this. In week 1 we started out with 'structured', thus formal, networking sessions, which allowed us to get started, whilst after a couple of days, once we got the hang of it, we had to take the initiative ourselves. I used to be a shy networker, however the insight programme has definitely changed this.

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The Insight was incredibly well structured. The timetable for the entire insight was distributed on day two, which was very useful for planning. Week 1 consisted primarily of training and speaker sessions, with some time at the desk thrown in for good measure. Week 2 had more of an emphasis on desk time, as we had our team and individual projects to work on. Human Capital Management truly did an admirable job in planning everything to perfection. On the rare occasion that something did go wrong, within minutes the timetable was slightly amended and everyone was notified immediately. One minor point of criticism would be that many sessions were scheduled back-to-back, and as sessions had a tendency to overrun, this sometimes left little to no time for bathroom/tea breaks.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was great. The other interns were pleasant, and as it was a rather small group in my division, we all got the chance to get to know each other fairly well, even though there weren't that many scheduled socials. The staff, once again, were incredibly kind and approachable, all of which created a nice and welcoming atmosphere. Most 西瓜视频 likely expect a competitive, daunting environment, however this was not the case at all!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel that the people at the firm invested a lot of one of their most valuable resources in me: their time. The speaker sessions always overran because everyone, even the most senior speakers, happily took their time to answer any questions we had. The same thing goes for the one-on-one meetings I had, which sometimes lasted twice as long as scheduled. It did not matter what the questions were about, ranging from personal careers to different types of pension funds or market conditions, they would be answered extensively.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It is difficult for a two week programme to offer a complete insight into a full-time role, and eventually you get away with only a snapshot. However, out of all the insight programmes that I know about, Goldman Sachs' programme definitely offers the most comprehensive insight. Especially useful was the desk time, which gave you a great insight into the day-to-day activities of staff in your division, and the one-on-one meetings with staff, during which they would informally describe their average day, what they perceived to be their role's pros and cons, etc.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The simple answer would be: very much. The entire programme is an immersion into Goldman Sachs culture. As much as it is an opportunity for the firm to see if you would fit in their culture, this is also true the other way around and I think this becomes clear rather quickly, due to how strong the culture really is. I definitely enjoyed the open and flat structure of the firm and its strong culture which is based around teamwork. This focus shines through everything you see.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Invaluable. I was curious to see if I would like Goldman Sachs, and I wanted to see if finance, and more specifically Investment Management, was really something for me. The perfect mix of formal and informal meetings, training sessions, desk time and projects to put myself to the test, offered me an answer to all these questions. Yes, I like the firm, and yes, I do see myself working in finance. What's more, the programme made me absolutely confident that within finance, Investment Management is the division for me, and it is now my number one career focus.

  • 4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • On day one, there was an afternoon tea sessions with the different affinity networks in the firm. They would provide us with information on their events. Additionally, we had the opportunity of signing up for classes in the onsite gym. Lastly, there were several sessions on Goldman's CSR practices.
