About You
The program was absolutely amazing. For two weeks you are treated as a member of the firm, which gives you liberty to navigate the trading floor (if you are interning in the Securities division) and talk to traders freely; a truly invaluable learning opportunity.
One of Goldman Sachs priorities is their people. They like to grow talent organically and early, so the Spring Internship is just as big for them as it is for the interns. They want you to leave the firm being convinced that this is the place you want to come back and work at, which they do by making you feel like you belong there.
Everyone on the trading floor had been made aware that the spring interns were there and were very open when we approached them. Coming from a non-finance/economic background, it was more difficult for me to keep up with the concepts and the technicals, but I was amazed at how willing people were to teach me. Some analysts and associates sat with me for hours, which was just incredible.
My degree is completely unrelated (Liberal Arts) but this opportunity definitely broadened my perspective concerning my future career.
The Company
During the first week, every day is packed with talks and presentations, with the first couple of days dedicated to introductory/firm-wide things. The rest of the week are talks by people from different desks on the trading floor. Between talks, we had desk rotations which we had been assigned to with another securities intern. We had more free time during the second week, which was essentially for meeting people on the trading floor. The program is really, really intense and I forgot to have lunch pretty much every day but I didn't mind since the alternative was walking around a GS trading floor.
Supportive, comfortable, friendly, mentorship-based, but intense!!
The internship is paid, which goes to shop how much GS values our personal development and future with the firm. We kept being reminded that as much as this was an evaluation of us by the firm in terms of being fast-tracked to the summer internship it was also an evaluation of the firm by us. We were even told by a senior to stop saying we felt "honoured" to be there because it was really all about us figuring out if we could see ourselves at the firm in the future.
The program is an "insight" so we obviously weren't able to replicate the every day tasks of a trader but we got a good understanding of what it entailed through the presentations and desk rotations. People were also very open about their personal experience and opinion of the firm which added to the overall picture of what it would be like to work there permanently.
The program was only two weeks long but through the people I met I believe I got a genuine understanding of the GS culture.
The program is very focused on showing us the different roles available on the trading floor and encourages you to learn more about the ones that interest you by meeting people on the trading floor.
Everything Else
We were free to talk to anyone on the trading floor and there were plenty of networking lunches and drinks.
We were encouraged to join the GS societies and go to the gym sessions.
