About You
My time at Goldman Sachs was intense, but incredibly enjoyable and a huge learning experience. Due to the jam-packed schedule and long working hours, it has set my personal standards extremely high in terms of my work ethic and resilience, standing me in good stead for any academic and professional challenges that lie ahead.
I felt incredibly valued as an intern at Goldman Sachs mainly because of how much time senior people in the firm gave up to talk to us; there was a clear and genuine interest in educating and including the interns in the day-to-day life of the firm. We regularly received individual feedback, meaning no intern went unnoticed.
We had a variety of both formal and informal points of contact within the firm that we could go for assistance. For example, we each had personal 'buddies' and also 'project-leads', to guide us in our assigned projects. Regular feedback and opportunities to touch base with the leaders of the programme ensured there was a sufficient amount of guidance and support available to us throughout the internship.
The programme has had a significant impact on my work ethic and ability to grasp and embrace a challenge. It has taught me the importance of interpersonal skills such as using people's names during conversations, which are skills that will be extremely beneficial to me as I develop my career.
The Company
The structure of the programme was incredible. Each day was centered around various presentations, lectures and discussions both as an intern class as a whole, and in our smaller divisions. The structure of the programme ensured I made the most of any time off available to meet new people, and also to effectively use this time to work with the other interns towards our group projects.
The atmosphere was very professional, but with a friendly edge. It was extremely inclusive and welcoming, which allowed for relationships with the other interns and staff to naturally develop in a relaxed manner. I was not afraid, for example, to approach an analyst at their desk or talk to someone in the coffee area, although the structural arrangement of the programme and the status of the people taking the time to talk to us was a constant reminder of the need to be professional and together at all times.
The level of the colleagues taking the time to talk to us was a clear indicator of the firm's investment in us as an intern class. The variety of talks, lectures and discussions available to us also demonstrated a desire to show us as much of the firm as possible, creating a well-rounded experience. The regular feedback meetings exemplifies a commitment to each individual intern.
The amount of work given to us meant we ought not to arrive at 9 and leave at 5, which was one of the key indicators for me of what life is really like at the firm. At 7am, the office is already alive, and this vibe continued until later on in the evening. This was not necessarily a bad thing, as having various opportunities to speak to as many of the employees as possible showed a real sense of passion for their work. The general environment and atmosphere at the firm is is something I would like to be part of. We had a range of different and detailed talks from analysts in a variety of different departments and sectors, which gave us an insight into their day-to-day work.
Being fully immersed in the firm' culture through things like being able to attend gym classes and use the cafeteria was fantastic in terms of gaining exposure to life at the firm. Having as many opportunities to chat to employees was really valuable in gauging the what it takes to work at the firm and how to fit into the culture. The diversity within the firm was particularly notable, with almost every other person you meet being dramatically different, giving a real sense of firm-wide inclusivity.
The broad range of sessions from a variety of different sectors within the division gave me a really detailed insight into all the different roles available at the firm. It has definitely helped me begin to make career decisions, and has given me an insight into the financial world; an industry I would have never thought I would fully pursue.
Everything Else
I was paid 拢715.20, excluding tax, and was reimbursed for my one return journey to London. I did not take advantage of the accommodation offered by Goldman Sachs due to family connections, however the pay for the experience was adequate in funding my stay in London in terms of travel and food expenses over the 2 weeks.
There were a variety of networking opportunities such as a women's networking lunch, where female employees took the time to talk to the female interns over food and drink provided. There was also a networking session one evening. In addition to formal networking opportunities, in our 'time off', I used the time to talk to analysts around my desk. I also went for coffee with various other employees to learn more about the firm.
Since there was such a large volume of interns compared to employees available to talk to at the networking events, it was relatively difficult to stand out and make concrete connections. It was sometimes difficult to separate from the other interns at these events, however once used to the dynamic with the other interns it became easier to make professional conversation with GS employees.
We found out about the Goldman Sachs Affinity Network, a network open to all professionals at Goldman Sachs to encourage inclusion and appreciation of diversity. For example, there are networks supporting the disabled, women, black males, sikhs etc. Also, there is the GS gym available for employees who pay for membership.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend; it was an incredibly valuable and unique experience. I have learnt so much and feel a genuine sense of enrichment both in terms of my personal development and my knowledge. I have learnt key skills particularly relating to interpersonal skills and work ethic.
