About You
I found this experience extremely enjoyable. What we learnt about the difference divisions at Goldman was insightful and extremely interesting. Although some talks and work shadowing events were more enjoyable than others, overall the people and the content made it a brilliant experience.
The spring weeks were very well organised, with a lot of attention given to ensuring that we always had something to do and knew what was going on. Our assigned graduate recruitment officer was very attentive and touched based with us everyday, to check whether we were enjoying ourselves and to make sure we knew our schedule. Additionally, other GS employees were so willing to meet up and give further insight into their work, making me feel like a valued intern,
The first day was comprised of many talks which outlined how the spring weeks would go and what things to expect. There was also huge emphasis placed on remaining calm, not becoming stressed and taking care of both our physical and mental health over the course of the internship, which I believe reflected their care for us. You are also assigned a 'buddy' who check in with you and this was a very supportive and helpful system.
I do not study a degree in finance and as such the internship has limited academic insight. However, it did help with motivation and time management skills.
The Company
I felt like our days were very well organised. Our schedule was busy but clear, with enough time left so that we could organised our own meetings with people in the firm. We were also always updated on what would be happening and as such could stay on top of our structured days.
Overall, I would say the atmosphere was very immersive and enthusiastic. Everyone you interacted with - both interns and employees - was extremely engaged and intelligent, which created a truly dynamic atmosphere. The only time when I think this faded slightly was when approaching interviews for the summer program, where there was a slight sense of competition. However, after interviews ended the vibe quickly went back to its more friendly nature.
I think that the experience at GS truly helped with personal development because of the way in which it pushed me out of my comfort zone. They truly invested in trying to challenge you and engage you in new opportunities and as such was a time of personal growth. However, I felt like due to the short term nature of the program, training was minimal as its aim was more to provided us with an insight into the different teams more generally.
I think the internship gave me a really good idea of the culture at GS. It's extremely collaborative, with teamwork being at the core of its principles. I learnt that all employees were extremely intelligent and engaged in their work and as such I was able to learn about the types of people I would be working with. Having said this, we were not able to actually complete any real work due to compliance and confidentiality. Therefore, I was not given a technical insight into working at the firm.
This internship only serves to confirm my interest in the financial industry. Never before had I experienced the culture of an investment bank and this internship quickly banished any prejudice I had surrounding the idea of a cut throat corporate culture. As such, it has been invaluable in my decision to pursue a career in finance and GS as a firm.
Everything Else
I was paid very generously for this internship.
There were so many opportunities to network, not only networking events but also chances to organise coffee catch ups with particular individuals. The number of employees that I interacted with was significant and then I was firmly encouraged to meet up with them again. However, it requires personal initiative and the confidence to email them and schedule a meeting.
The opportunities to network were truly insightful. They gave you a real opportunity to better understand what type of person works at GS. Some were quite formal events - such as a Q&A panel while others were more relaxed - a coffee catch up session - but regardless all were very open and approachable situations where all questions could be asked - both technical and personal - in order to better understand GS.
The main focus of the internship I would say was work-based. Having said that we were made aware of the different networks within GS such as the women's network and the disability network which many employees were a part of. It's clear that the events held by these networks were very popular and a great non-work activity to get involved with. Also, if you were chatting to someone in a more relaxed environment, what they enjoy outside of GS would often come up when asking about work life balance.
Absolutely, this is such a wonderful experience. The insight that I gained at GS was invaluable. You learn more about what GS does as a firm, but also you truly get to interact with the people here and get a better idea of what it could have in store for you. Even if you choose not to pursue a career in finance, you learn about a professional environment, meet some great people and it looks brilliant on your CV! Definitely apply!
