About You
The insight was a great way to learn more about the Securities division and get a view of how the division is divided up and works. Our time was divided up nicely between scheduled desk rotations, and presentations by senior members, and time to be able to research and meet with professionals in our free time.
Everyone was aware that the spring week was going on so everyone was incredibly friendly and approachable. It was easy to set up times to meet people and ask further questions or learn more about their role. We would have people ask for our opinions on current events and the market, so everybody was able to share their perspective.
The HCM team were always available for any queries we had. On top of this, we were given buddies who worked in Securities we could approach for general questions and advice, and senior mentors who could give us advice on how we were doing. When it came to individual
I study pure maths, so the knowledge I picked up doesn't direct help to my degree - however softer skills, such as communication and presenting, would assist me in my degree and beyond, and help me figure out if the industry is a right fit for me.
The Company
We were given a clear set timetable for the 2 weeks, so everyone knew what they were doing. If there was a change of schedule, we would be notified quickly with due time.
It seemed intimidating at first, especially when beginning to approach professionals to ask questions, but I soon realised how willing everyone is to help you on the beginning of your career, or even figure out if the firm and industry is a right fit for you. The spring week was also at a quieter time of the year, so there were many opportunities to ask questions.
We had presentations by senior professionals spread out over the spring week, and about all it's different desks- so it definitely provided the opportunity to learn about each division. Asking questions was encouraged, and we could find out more during desk rotations where we had the chance to work shadow professionals, and see what they do day-to-day.
We were fully immersed in the company, so it was easy to see what it would be like to have a full time role with the firm. In addition, we were allowed to join some meetings and have a full perspective of every aspect of the job.
The firm places emphasis on it's people and diversity, and this was definitely evidenced during the insight.
For me personally, this has definitely encouraged me to pursue a career in Securities. This was an amazing opportunity to be able to decide on whether or not this career is for you.
Everything Else
I live outside of London so was also given accommodation near the firm
We were able to meet new employees everyday - during desk rotations and company presentations. There were also many different women's events, so we were able to talk to women in different divisions across the firm.
We were encouraged to network with employees and also with other interns in different divisions too. There was a welcoming networking event with all the interns present and many presentations where all interns were required to attend.
We were encouraged to sign up to gym classes across the 2 weeks.
This was definitely a great way to learn more about the industry and figure out if this is the career for you.
