About You
I really enjoyed the insight placement. I learned a great deal over the course of the 2 weeks and had the privilege of being introduced to such a range of people. I really got to see a broad range of practice and get involved on a broad range of work.
I felt very valued at the firm. My thoughts were given due consideration and complex concepts that I had yet to grasp were broken down for me and explained in a simple and yet in an effective manner. I really enjoyed how I was made to feel welcome and a part of the teams I worked in.
I was given the right balance between support/guidance and independence to solve issues and tackle the work myself over the course of the 2 weeks. I would be given feedback as I handed in tasks as well as at the end of the week which was very helpful and constructive.
The independence I was given to tackle and solve problems was extremely useful to develop my own confidence and skills in this field of work. What I also learned definitely gave me a deeper understanding behind things from a commercial perspective, which helped me understand my own studies at University better.
The Company
The insight was structured very well. I would have liked to see more of how the legal teams interact with the other divisions more in the firmwide talks. I though the structure was great, as it allowed a balance between getting work done, and networking with employees and other interns around Goldman Sachs.
The general atmosphere was really friendly. I had had no previous experience at Goldman Sachs, so having the opportunity to experience the culture of the company was truly invaluable. I really enjoyed the range of fantastic people that I can across, all from such interesting backgrounds and stories to how they got to where they currently are.
The company invested in me quite a bit through giving me multiple courses to complete online and take part in to better my personal development. Such courses included advanced courses for using Excel 2013/14 which I found to be incredibly useful! I also had to undertake mandatory training that is offered to all staff.
The insight really helped me understand the company’s culture, which to me is a collection of brilliant people, each with their own story – bound together by a love for their work and resilience to get things done to the best of their ability. I really felt welcome at the firm.
Everything Else
I really wanted to get involved in the life at Goldman Sachs outside of the office, so I looked into other clubs which was on offer that I could join. I wasted no time in joining the badminton club and this was also a great opportunity to network and meet people from completely different departments across the organisation.
I would most certainly recommend this insight programme to a friend. It really gives one a better idea of what Goldman Sachs actually does. It is also a fantastic programme for meeting new people, as well as developing your own skills and confidence. It also widens career prospects by exposing you to so many different paths you can take.
