About You
I very much enjoyed the internship - it was structured so that people from any background could attend, and had a very diverse range of people in attendance. It definitely provided excellent insight into the life of Investment Bankers in all the sub-divisions of the Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs, while showing the culture of the firm and emphasizing the GS values. You will need to have a genuine interest in Finance and a curiosity about Investment Banking to enjoy and make the most of this internship.
I felt very valued - everyone in the firm was very helpful and friendly, and answered all questions, no matter how big or small they were. It was heavily emphasized that people at GS come from all backgrounds and degree subjects, and so it was easy to feel valued and a sense of belonging.
We had plenty of opportunities to speak to HCM (Human Capital Management) to seek feedback or support on any issues, in addition to receiving guidance and support from analysts on our practical tasks (i.e. completing case studies, learning about the GS culture).
I was able to practice my teamwork and presentation skills, in addition to improving my knowledge about investment banking, the work GS does, and learning more about markets and companies and the work GS does in relation to them.
The Company
The internship was structured very well - there was planned time for training and working on case studies, time for speakers to come to talk to us about the work they do and the culture of GS, while also some free time to ensure people with extra commitments (e.g. coffee meetings with our assigned Analyst Buddies or debate team meetings) were able to fit those in. The order and number of planned activities worked very well - there was a gradual build-up of knowledge and complexity that made it very easy to follow along.
All the employees at Goldman Sachs - including our buddies, HCM, speakers and other employees - were very friendly and open, answering any questions we had very honestly. The atmosphere of the Investment Banking interns was also great - there was very good cohesion within the cohort, which made completing case studies and debating in teams very friendly and lively.
We began the internship with general training, then used the information learned in two case studies. We were also provided with interview tips, and opportunities to ask questions to analysts and associates. Spring interns who move on to the summer internship or to become a full-time employee also receive lots of training.
While we were not able to work on ongoing deals for confidentiality reasons, we were able to hear about some closed deals and work on case studies dealing with previous deals. While simplified, the tasks we had to accomplish in order to work through the case studies, in addition to hearing about the lives of various investment bankers throughout the internship, really gave a good insight into what life at GS would be like.
The business principles and diversity of GS were very much emphasized over the course of the internship. We heard about GS's community programs and hoe employees contribute, and also were able to meet with GS's affinity networks (e.g. Ethnic Minority groups, Women's group). Speakers also emphasized the importance of diversity and teamwork when they came to speak to the interns.
The content definitely provided great insight into what it would be like to work as an investment banker, and made me think that I would enjoy working as an investment banker.
Everything Else
I was paid for this internship, in addition to having accommodation and a return trip paid for.
We were assigned buddies to ask questions to - most people met with their buddies at least once over the course of the internship. There were also networking sessions set up for interns to be able to speak with someone from each sub-division of IBD, and interns were able to contact people who had spoken to us or people from our home countries in order to be able to ask questions about the firm and the role the respective people play in their division.
There were several networking events hosted by the firm - including to meet affinity networks and people from different sub-divisions of IBD.
We were able to try out the gym, and heard a lot about various sports teams employees can get involved in. It was also emphasized that people are able to make time for their own prior hobbies.
I would recommend this insight to anyone with a genuine interest in finance, M&A or markets, regardless of their subject or personal background.
