The Role
This Spring Internship is like no other in terms of the breadth and intensity that it has. Being unique in the sense that it is 2 weeks instead of one really allows you to develop your technical knowledge as well as form deep connections with others. It was one of the most rewarding 2 weeks of my life.
The firm really places an emphasis on collaboration and team work; and so everyone's opinion is valued and everyone is respected. It was incredible how very senior people could take time out of their very busy days to talk to a spring intern about what they do and actually ask us questions and interact with us (particularly as they had little obligation to do so).
The HCM division who were responsible for coordinating the program put on great interactive sessions with MD's and VP's for us to learn more about the firm and about each of the different asset classes. However, you need to take the initiative to go out and meet analysts of your own accord outside of the sessions put on so you can really experience first hand in a one-on-one environment what its like to work at the firm.
This internship was one of the most intense 2 week periods of my life! One of the things that will really test you is the ability to time manage as there may be things clashing. Also, the timetable you are given shouldn't be the start and finish of your day! There are so many things you should be doing outside of your set timetable to learn more (e.g. morning calls, networking and meetings you've set up alone etc.)
As a spring intern with no qualifications and limited experience, it is natural that you aren't given responsibility to place trades or to contribute to real trade ideas. However, at this stage of our careers, for many of us, we do not have the skill set to be able to handle real responsibility. Also, the internship was much more about learning and developing as an aspiring employee as opposed to executing trades and representing the firm to clients.
The skills I learned from this internship were invaluable; my teamwork skills were enhanced through the group project and PMD discussions; my technical knowledge was enhanced through interactive sessions and meetings with specialists with respect to a given asset class. Moreover, my networking skills improved as you have to take the initiative to meet analysts and other interns of your own accord. These skills will no doubt help me when it comes to being in the workplace in the future.
