About You
A great exposure into the financial sector. The
As a Spring Intern it is difficult to add any value to the company whilst you are there, however ,the team I was with made me feel very welcome and went out of their way to talk to me and to tell me about their roles. I also felt very included in my team, and they invited me to social events outside of the office.
I was assigned a buddy for the 2 weeks I was at the firm and they were a great source of advice and helped me to network across the firm and gave advice before final presentations were due. The Recruiter was present in almost every skills session, so if you had any queries, there were many opportunities to express them.
The greatest skill I learnt during the Spring Week was networking. There was many opportunities to meet new people across the bank in a variety of settings. Additionally we had a variety of skills sessions to help with our professional development, such as an interview skills session.
The Company
The timetable for the 2 weeks was excellent. I always knew where I should be and at what time. The timetable included a good variety of activities, including speakers from within the firms, skills sessions, desk time and networking events.
All the other interns were very collaborative in their approach to the Spring Week. At the beginning it was made clear to us were not competing against each other, and if we performed well, they had enough spaces for all of us. Employees were always interested to talk to us and gave up considerable amounts of their time to help us get the most out of the programme.
The firm ran many sessions aimed at improving our personal skills, such as an interview skills workshop and an interactive session about how to ask different types of questions. Additionally, half way through the insight we had a one-to-one check in with our human capital manager to feedback on our experience so far and to understand how we were doing.
We were allocated a substantial amount of time to spend on a specific desk during the two weeks. This meant we had a great insight into the work they did. We were also encouraged to meet with people from other desks to understand what their role entails. Furthermore, we had a lot of talks and question and answer sessions to find out what other teams and departments did.
A large focus was placed on the Goldman Sachs culture and mentioned to us many times by a variety of people. It was spoken of formally in talks, but also in conversations with employees. Nearly everybody I spoke to said that Goldman Sachs is differentiated from other banks because of its culture.
2 weeks allowed a sufficient length of time to get a thorough insight into the work I would be doing at the firm and this experience has definitely helped me to decide on what I would like to do in my future career. The content of each day was very well organised, with a wide variety of activities.
Everything Else
I was also provided with accommodation for the duration of the insight.
There were a handful of networking events throughout the 2 weeks, both over lunch and in the evening. These were informal and we could approach anybody we wanted to. We also had question and answer sessions in small groups which gave ample opportunity to ask any questions we had. We were also encouraged to network and go for 'catch-ups' during our desk time.
Lots of networking events held inside the office with a variety of employees. Also, our human capital manager organised a quiz night one evening which was great fun. It was very informal, with pizza and drinks, and a great chance to get to know our fellow interns and the employees we had been working most closely with better.
We were informed about the various affinity networks within the firm which we could join and the type of activities they organise. Additionally, there are many volunteering projects employees are able to get involved in, and each employee is given one day off a year to volunteer. There is a gym in the basement of the office which appeared to be popular with employees. I would have liked some information about any sports teams I could have joined.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend as it gave great exposure to what a career in finance and Goldman Sachs would be like. The programme is very intense, but this helps to ensure you get the most out of your 2 weeks at the firm. All the staff were very helpful, supportive and went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed ourselves and all of our questions were answered.
