About You
I enjoyed this insight a lot because it gave me the unique opportunity to look inside the investment banking industry and J.P. Morgan's culture. Meeting many interesting and open-minded people was a great way to find out whether there could be a personal fit with the company.
Everybody was very open to receive us Spring Interns. J.P. Morgan also provided networking sessions with former Spring Interns from previous years who have done well and managed to go on to Summer Internships or even Full Time jobs at the bank.
I especially enjoyed our case study work together with our project mentor who was a third year analyst. He taught us many things which are important for the valuation and analyses for acquisitions and made me feel like I was actually work-shadowing (which is otherwise not feasible with Investment Banking being on the private information side).
I learned a massive amount through the case study on a possible acquisition. It took us on a dive into a specific industry as well, so you get a feel about how much you can learn on a project. This leaning experience will surely help me with my finance courses, on the other hand I believe that many things will become clearer as soon as you learn it with a theoretic background in lectures at university.
The Company
Very well structured with tight schedules. Unfortunately, the afternoon tea networking sessions with junior and senior bankers from the division were a little too short in my view. If you wanted to speak to many different people, it got very stressful and less enjoyable and insightful.
Everyone was very keen to learn and HR made us all feel very valued and welcome.
You could tell it is important to J.P. Morgan to recruit young talents at an early stage. Even though a lot of Spring Interns were first-year or second-year undergraduates who might not even have a Business / Finance / Economics background and thus not very much knowledge about the technicalities, it is a huge investment to find the fresh minds with analytical and presentation skills.
Although there was no formal work-shadowing as the Investment Banking division works on the private information side of the bank and is thus confidential, I really enjoyed the case study sessions with our group project mentor who was an Analyst from the division. This gave a really good insight into his work. Also, speaking to different people from different teams within this division made it all clear how the teams work together.
Talking to various people, listening to their presentations on their divisions, teams and work from their roles and attending networking sessions gave you the opportunity to get a feel for the culture of J.P. Morgan. Most company representatives were interested in talking to us Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs and I definitely felt that this makes you understand whether you fit in the bank on a personal level as well.
I have made up my mind that I would like to work in the Investment Banking division after this Spring Week. Of course I want to keep different opportunities open but this gave me more certainty of what my future path may look like. I had an unforgettable week at J.P. Morgan exploring the different lines of business and scratching the surface of a career in Investment Banking.
Everything Else
We had so many opportunities, it was amazing to talk to so many employees coming from different backgrounds and jobs in the firm.
Very nice though it was stressful to meet as many people as you can. Nice settings and nice food. I enjoyed those a lot.
There were some insights in the beginning of the week and some information in the booklet that we received, but there was no opportunity to meet people presenting on different networks within the firm.
For sure! I had an incredible week at J.P. morgan learning all about the bank and separate divisions. Really hope to stay in contact with all the fantastic and enthusiastic people I met - fellow spring interns, current employees and recruitment team!
