The Role
I enjoyed the internship very much - There is always someone to ask questions and support your professional development. Moreover, I found the "extra-curricular" workshops, such as, CV/Presentation skills, Intermediate Excel and Behaviour change session very interesting and useful. The building itself is in a great location as well.
I very much felt valued and part of a team, colleagues would want to know my opinion on a task/subject and that made me feel a skilled member of the team.
I was given fantastic support, weekly 1:1 with your line manager gave you a good opportunity to express any concerns or ask questions without feeling overwhelmed by your environment (big, busy office!) You also have regular reviews where you discuss your progress, receive feedback on your work and whether there is any other tasks you'd like to complete while at the charity. The support and feedback has been invaluable to me, as someone who lacks confidence it has made me realise that I have lots of good qualities that would benefit an employer. This support is something I haven't received in previous internships.
If you structure your time well, you are busy but it is manageable. The day goes quickly but I've never felt overwhelmed.
The tasks I was responsible for I had complete ownership over and it was up to me to plan my time effectively and complete them within a certain time frame. Some tasks I assisted with, which gave me a good opportunity to learn from experienced members of staff.
The skills will help me in my educational interest (Public Health) and other skills, such as, working under pressure and project management have provided me with a solid foundation for my next career step.
The Company
Friendly, productive and open.
Very well organised, events were notified in advance, the emailing system between intern manager and interns was clear and structured. It was made very obvious of the important dates and times to remember and the appropriate paperwork that needed to be completed.

I think CRUK are very good at hiring graduates and giving them a starting point in their career. From what I've heard there are a few development programmes for new starters to develop skills, such as, presentation and project management to aid their progression within the organisation. Also, a lot of the people I've spoken to in various departments about their career path stated that they previously completed an internship at CRUK.
The Culture
As I travelled further than most interns, I didn't take part in many of the weekly socials. However, I was always invited and people regularly met up once a week for food and/or drinks. Intern fundraising is a great way to build relationships and make friends while doing something good for the charity that has provided you with a career opportunity.
My commute was expensive and way over the small amount the organisation reimburse you for your travel. Meaning, as I was technically working for free and not making any money elsewhere. This meant that by the end of the internship I had very little money for socialising and in need of a paid job. I would recommend paying interns minimum wage as we are working on necessary projects to help the organisation and not paying can put a barrier against people who do not live in London or come from a privileged background.
Can't answer this question! never went out in Islington, however, it is such a nice part of London with lots of places to eat and nice shops. I can imagine the nightlife is very safe and fun :)
I think the only opportunities provided were related to fundraising (boat racing, world cancer day, London marathon) to collect money. In addition to the opportunity to have a lab tour. So some, but not many.
