About You
It was very useful and informative about BP IST and their various activities. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the different divisions, their roles, functions and how they link with one another. This I thought was valuable, especially to learn the intricacies of BP's upstream and downstream activities. A very fun day!
I felt very valued, because although it was just an insight day, the firm made sure we had sufficient exposure and time with Analysts. These employees had taken the time from their busy schedules to come and talk to us, which was very nice to see. They also wanted our feedback on the day, making our opinions seem important and desired by BP.
There were numerous opportunities to ask questions, resolve any queries and check any doubts that we had. This was very useful since there were some people unfamiliar with concepts such as Bid/Offer spreads and other technical terms, which would play an important part of the activities we would be participating in.
The information won't assist me too much in my degree, since it was heavily geared towards learning about the specific Integrated Sales and Trading division of BP. It may help with 'beyond' in terms of awareness about employment opportunities, and the culture at a firm like BP. Not many skills developed because it was just an insight day.
The Company
There was a clear plan at the very beginning, outlining the day's schedule. There was even an opportunity to express what we wanted to learn so that it might be incorporated into the day's activities. They had definitely planned everything from start to finish in order to make the programme run as smoothly as possible.
It was very relaxed, calm and inviting. We were in a large, spacious room and arranged comfortably with regards to seating. There was a very chilled out feeling and no one was under pressure to raise their hand or contribute, however there was was a very welcoming attitude towards asking a question or approaching a member of staff.
Not a lot.
By bringing in real analysts, who were working there, to come and speak to us, we learnt a lot about the full time role. In addition, we were also told how the internship would lead to a full time role and what rotations would take place, as well as the options available to us within those roles and different divisions.
The analysts and other employees who spoke to us gave us a clear insight into the company's culture, as well as diverse approach in hiring to ensure a workforce of all different backgrounds. This gave the impression of a very pleasant and personable culture as well as working environment at BP.
It was only an insight day and so difficult to decide whether a career in Integrated Supply and Trading is the best path. However I think it was valuable to take in the information in combination with other experiences and knowledge of other industries, to ultimately decide which career path is right for me.
Everything Else
Travel expenses reimbursed.
There wasn't a lot of time to network, and not with a lot of people either, however I think that was due to time constraints. It was important that they all explained their role and we had a goat the trading game and therefore I think that left less time to network and properly meet the employees in a one-to-one manner, and find out about them individually.
They were alright.
A little bit.
Yes definitely. BP Integrated Supply and Trading is a strong alternative to a career in investment banks, if you are considering a career in trading. It is good to meet the firm and see the culture, since they seem to have a better work/life balance, as well as other benefits. This is useful since BP is such a large, global organisation.
