The Role
It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and it unquestionably will stand me in good stead in the future when looking for graduate positions etc.
All of my colleagues were very helpful and eager to help me wherever possible. They also took an interest in my work and would ask me to contribute to meetings and presentations wherever my knowledge could be applied.
My supervisor was always available to bounce ideas off, as were the rest of my colleagues. He was also willing to let me provide justifications for changing my work focus and was very helpful in providing feedback on the quality of my work.
Sometimes I would need to stay late to get my work done, but I didn't mind doing this and often it meant the quality of my work was improved. I still had time to enjoy the social side of London as well!
I was expected to make most of my work progress on my own, but with weekly meetings with my supervisor and mentors to keep me on track and to find out if I felt the work I was doing was worthwhile. If I wanted to change focus I was able too as long as I could provide good justifications for doing so.
It helped a lot regarding communication skills, I needed to be able to approach people for whom I have very little over-lapping knowledge but still effectively ask them the questions that will provide me with useful answers. This will be very helpful in an engineering future where companies of very different expertise often collaborate on projects.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly, hard working and motivated to produce quality results for the company wherever possible, It is an office, so it is not always 'fun' but it is a pleasant environment to be in and a very kind group of people to work with.
It was very well organised; there was a clear and defined structure to the internship with a lot of discussion about how potential future employment might occur. There was also lots of committee's and groups which we could join to improve the nature of the internship and become more connected with the company.
I feel like they invested a lot in me. They paid me well for a start, introduced me to a projects team with a lot of challenges and expected me to contribute to them. They also allowed for senior engineers to spend a lot of time working with me to develop my skills and assist the firm.

Financial Bonus
Although I met the benchmarks needed to get a job with BP; due to the financial downturn in the oil and gas industry there are not enough jobs going in my role. I was informed that I would have been offered a job if the demand was there; and if I had been offered one I probably would have accepted it.
The Culture
Yes, all of the interns were really good fun and worked hard but also were very keen to often go out, have drinks and get involved in as many events and activities as possible. These included going to rugby matches, bowling and going into London.
It was expensive, but that's perhaps because where I live in Glasgow the cost of living is a lot cheaper anyway. So, by perspective it seemed very expensive to me.
Excellent, in the south-west of London there are a lot of nightclubs, bars and restaurants; things that everyone can enjoy.
The company had a variety of ongoing sports activities and events in the evenings that anyway could get involved with. Often my team would go out for drinks and food after work which was great fun.
