The Role
I had a really great experience working with BP - I was given a lot of flexibility around the work that I wanted to do but it was also very well structured in that I was able to really understand BP, HR and the oil and gas industry much more clearly. The team that I was placed in were really lovely and helpful throughout my internship. I also stayed in a hall of residence with most of the other interns so there was a great environment to meet lots of great people.
My colleagues within and outside my team were all really helpful and genuinely interested in helping me in any way they could. However, what was especially great for me was that I was given the opportunity to give my own opinions and perspectives. I had some abilities/skills that my team didn't and they welcomed the opportunity for me to share this with them. We often had lunch together and even went to box-ercise classes!
One of the key things that I enjoyed about my internship was that I wasn't micro-managed and was given flexibility around the work I did. However, I had frequent meetings with my line manager/supervisor which helped me to stay on track. I was also sat in the middle of the whole team so it was easy for me to ask questions and get feedback from my team whenever I needed it.
How busy I was tended to vary depending on the day/current work load. My day consisted of meetings with my team, meeting with other people at BP, working on my project, research and loads of other events/activities/meet and greets/intern things. Overall it was a perfect balance as I had the ability to decide myself what to prioritise and could plan my day/week around specific things that were going on.
I was given lots of responsibility - working independently on my main project was great as I could really take ownership of it but I also knew that it was a valuable piece of work that would continue after I had gone. I had plenty of other roles of responsibility which initially seemed daunting but it was great to be trusted with work that was actually valued.
This was a great insight into working in a corporate environment which has given me a much better understanding of what I want to do in the future. In addition to the obvious part of gaining more knowledge of HR/oil and gas industry I learned valuable interpersonal skills and how to network in a corporate environment.
The Company
There was always something extra going on. There were often meet and greets with different teams/departments/senior people as well as fun summer BBQ sessions, rounders matches, group exercise classes etc. This meant that there was a lot of variety in the day to day life that made it much more interesting. Everyone was always really friendly and helpful - a great atmosphere
Really well organised - a great mix of working independently within our respective teams but also plenty of opportunities and events to interact with other interns and graduates at BP. There were plenty of opportunities to gain feedback and have formal training as well that fit in with the day to day work we had.
I was given more formal training were we would take the day out of work e.g. Presentation training. However, I was also taught plenty of on the job skills that will be really useful in the future. Particularly how to use certain software that I would otherwise not be able to learn. Members of my team took time out of their busy days to sit down with me and teach me certain skills/tasks or even just to help me understand certain parts of the business that I wasn't familiar with.

The company culture was really amazing - a great atmosphere that obviously works hard but is still really down to earth and friendly. BP is definitely a company that I would work for again, especially as I get the impression that other companies do not have the same work environment. BP is hard to get into but once you are in they really look after you in terms of career progression so it is definitely very appealing.
The Culture
There was definitely a good social scene. I really enjoyed working with my colleagues and we even went to fitness classes together during and after work! I also lived in the intern halls which meant there were loads of other people around me in the same boat. All the interns would often organise things together outside of work - I was genuinely sad to say good bye to them at the end of the internship.
Technically I was living in London so it was expensive, but being in Twickenham was actually a bit cheaper than being in Central. Regardless, BP did give us extra money to compensate for London prices when we were paid. It was often expensive to travel into central London so we did often just stay in the area and go to pubs there.
Where the office was actually based (in Sunbury) the nightlife really wasn't great. There was a BP bar but it wasn't quite in the same office area so not many people used it. Saying that many people would meet in a nearby area to get drinks later and we definitely overcame this issue but travelling elsewhere - it wasn't really a problem. There were even some great evenings organised by BP for interns that made it really easy to have a fun social life.
There were loads of opportunities - There were summer BBQs, charity days, events for nearby schools that we helped in etc. Beyond that as interns we organised meals out for all of us, cinema trips, plenty of nights out, shopping trips etc. There was sometimes too much to do!
