    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Great workplace culture, very values focused and emphasis placed on taking the time to meet colleagues from different areas of the business. There were a number of events for interns to meet with senior members from different business groups and a number of opportunities to take part on employee committees/charity events. Certainly enjoyed my time at BP and would highly recommend the summer internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that my work was having a real impact on my team and that it would continue to be used after I left. On the analytics side we spent a good amount of time getting to grips with interesting and up to date programming techniques - something I hadn't expected to take on that turned out to be a good challenge. Could have done with more opportunity to formally present my work, in particular to seniors.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The recruitment team were fantastic in their support and organised a number of really interesting and useful events. Took part in charity days, intern committees and accessibility events. In terms of the workload itself, I was given the opportunity to complete a large number of projects semi-independently (which suits my working style). Direct supervisor was friendly, knowledgeable and allowed me to take on work which was challenging and insightful.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • One aspect of the internship that I highly valued was the work-life balance. I was given a number of base projects and later work evolved naturally from suggestions from colleagues, my supervisor and my own ideas. I never felt that I did not have work to do, or that my work was unimportant and additionally I never felt any pressure to stay beyond reasonable working hour. Extremely comfortable environment to work in.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Given projects that I felt were useful to the team and were challenging enough to interest me. I do feel that sometimes it was easy to fall into a relaxed atmosphere as none of my projects were particularly time constrained - would have enjoyed the opportunity to show that I can perform in higher pressure scenarios.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Hugely useful for building skills, lots of technical expertise on the trading floor. Couldn't fault this aspect at all, I learned two different programming languages from scratch to a fairly usable level. Important to learn from the people in the office, worked with some excellent technical and experienced analysts to improve my statistical skills and understanding of the markets.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Plenty training and development, the company really stick to their core values and provide lots of training on both soft-skills and technical skills. Meeting a diverse range of people was great for my personal development and there were an endless number of extremely experienced workers who found time to have a coffee with me while I was there.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Graduate position offered, which I intend to take. Brilliant work-life balance for the industry, based in a great location and the graduate role offers a reasonable level of compensation. Good flexible benefits schemes etc. I feel that opportunities for career progression within the organisation are good, numerous people mentioned that they had been with the company for a long time.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • Social scene with the other interns was reasonable. Mostly we organised our own events, there did seem to be some separation from the interns at different offices. Would have liked to see more organised social events for interns across different offices, although I wouldn't say this is a priority or does it weigh into my choice of picking a firm to work for.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reasonably expensive and compensation during the internship is lower than a number of other comparable firms in the area. Living in canary wharf is expensive, although a number of the interns chose to live closer to outer London which cut costs significantly. Would also note that it doesn't have to be expensive, lots of free events etc. Cost of food/drinks is relatively high, but nothing exceptional for London.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf has a really interesting atmosphere, can be extremely fun during the summer when weather is good. Lots of opportunities to join work colleagues for after-work events and most events had a good work-social balance - relaxed and semi-informal. Very much enjoyed it, extremely busy at all times during the week.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Loads of out of work activities, charity events etc. Canary Wharf itself has a fair few attractions throughout summer - great market food every few weeks right outside the office, loads of restaurants and bars. There was a great period throughout Wimbledon when a big screen was setup in the middle of Canada Square and was available for anyone to watch while sitting on the grass. Could have been more events aimed at socialising with the current graduates.
