    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed working at BP. I found the work I did fulfilling, valued, and interesting. It also helped that the group of people I worked with in my team, and the other interns, were really insightful and fun.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work I did became a base plan for a project that will happen in the future. The team thought I completed my work to a high standard and because of this, valued my work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor sat on the desk next to mine and helped me with any questions, queries, or problems which arose. Also, I could get help from other members of my team and others who were employed at BP.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • With the exception of my last week, I was very busy on a daily basis. Whether this was attending meetings, doing my own work, or helping others with their work. The last week wasn't busy because I completed the work that I'd been set and my supervisor decided there wasn't time for me to start a new project. I spent the week making final touches and small improvements to the work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was left to my own devices for the whole of my internship and given responsibility to complete my project and lead one or two meetings.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not only did I learn how to use new programs on the computer, I also developed my excel skills. In terms of soft skill, I learnt how to effectively communicate to peers and coworkers.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is very relaxed. The hours are 8am-5pm, and you get every other Friday (so long as you've completed all of your work). The food is essentially free (you get a £5 allowance every lunchtime and meals are almost always less than that), and they offer lunch and breakfast. If the weather's nice you can walk around the small lake, or eat lunches on the benches outside. There are sports teams and events that mean you can network and relax outside of your team. My team was split between Egypt and Sunbury which meant that there were weekly Skype meetings - these were interesting not only to see how the business operates globally, but also for the cultural differences between the two offices.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Due to restructuring at BP at the time I joined, the first two weeks of my internship were a little disorganised. After this, however, my goals and targets were very clear and the internship was very well structured. One area to improve is to make sure that outcomes from the internship (i.e. whether you get a job offer, or not) could be quicker and better communicated - I was told for three weeks that I would be told next week. This isn't necessarily a problem, it's just a little frustrating not knowing.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a day in the Canary Wharf office where I received talks about mental improvement and development, as well as a presentation skills workshop which proved to be very interesting and rewarding.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Given the oil price and the role I had in the internship, job prospects are very low. However, there may be an opportunity for further study, potentially funded by BP.

    2/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • Very good. I made some incredible friends and we often did events together outside of work.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The accommodation sourced by BP wasn't particularly good value for money, in my opinion, so I rented a room of a friend who was studying in London. This meant my commute was quite long, but I lived in a really nice flat in a nice area. The train was about £5 a day and my rent was £135pw.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • We were in London, there's always loads to do!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was an entertainment committee for the interns who organised events for us to do together. These ranged from pub and bar trips to paint balling.
