The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my work placement at E.ON. I was working at Ratcliffe Power Station as part of the Station Office Team. The work given to me was of a high enough level for me to be tested, but it was always something I felt I could tackle. It was a great place to work.
I felt that throughout my placements, my role, opinions and ideas were all valued extremely highlight. I was treated as a full time member of staff and not just as an intern. Executive managers were also interested in my progress and how I was getting on, so it was not just my own team that looked out for me.
My line manager was always there for support if I needed it, and would put my needs in front of hers. I couldn't have wished for a better working relationship. I was allowed some choice of areas I would like to push myself in and my development was always supported.
I was always kept busy. Like any job, there are going to be parts of the role you enjoy less than others, and some jobs that are a drain but these were heavily outweighed by interesting and testing work. If I ever had time to myself, somebody would always welcome my assistance on another piece of work. The working environment I was in was very team orientated and we would always make sure no one was getting too bogged down.
I was given more and more responsibility as my placement year unfolded. I was in full control of monthly reports and my team and the Exec relied on me to get these reports correct, and publish them efficiently. I was asked to sit on interview panels and facilitate important company meetings. The undergraduates are also given a major project to work on themselves, which really tested our skills and competencies.
I have returned to University so much more confident in myself. After working for a year I have grown to realise I have a lot to give, and I can deal with tight deadlines and pressure that comes with working in a huge company such as E.ON. Part of my studies this year is applying my knowledge to act as a consultant for a local firm which I feel so much more able to do after completing a placement.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office changed throughout the year because of reshuffling. Originally the office was me an two others so tended to be a calmer, quieter environment. After christmas there were 10 of us, so naturally it became louder, and there was more going on. I enjoyed both these set ups for different reasons. The office was built on teamwork, and everyone would be able to help each other - together we were able to deal with just about anything the day would throw at us. There was a great balance of experience as well, with three undergraduates and others that had been at the station for years.
The placement was set up so there was an overlap between me starting the the previous 西瓜视频 finishing. This was done so I could transition slowly into the role with support and also because it was a real role - the only person who knew it fully was the previous placement 西瓜视频. Throughout the year I got together with my manager to set up objective and to discuss my progress and how I was feeling. We were also pushed to get involved with as much as we wanted so we could really make the placement our own.
I was enrolled onto some training in my time there (first aid, fire safety etc.) which I can now take forwards with me. My manager was also extremely supportive of visit arranged for the undergraduates - including National Grid HQ and Cottam CCGT Power Station. Throughout the year I was given work that really pushed my learning, that could highlight just how much I had improved since I started.

I have been fast-tracked to the assessment centre stage of the graduate scheme E.ON run, and have been offered a lot of support from people at the Power Station to help me prepare for that. Whilst I was working, I was constantly reminded to keep notes of everything I had done, and how they could transfer into interview answers. I always felt like my future was in the minds of all that I worked with, and that they were willing to help me with anything.
The Culture
I was lucky enough to do my placement with 9 other 西瓜视频s (3 Business, 6 Engineering). We always ate lunch together and supported each other on projects. We all had slightly different previous experience, so could always offer an alternative viewpoint. Out of work we always met up and went out at the weekends and became good friends. A lot of us lived together so could share lifts to and from work.
The closest city to the Power Station was Nottingham where most of us lived. The cost of living was easily manageable whilst earning a good wage, with enough spare to save to return to University. Being in quite a big city made it very easy to socialise, and with all of us being within a few miles radius it was never a big journey for any of us.
Nottingham is a big city so naturally had good nightlife. It was great to go out for food, go for a drink or clubs - really whatever kind of night we wanted, we could have. With Nottingham being a city with two Universities, there were also a lot of 西瓜视频s about which is always a good thing, as it is always very lively, and the average costs of drinks/entry in nightclubs is slightly lower.
Me and a few others at work joined the local gym together and went most days after finishing. This was a great way to socialise and keep fit and something I definitely recommend if your job is heavily desk based like mine was! There was also opportunity to play football and other sports.
