    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Incredible experience being able to learn a huge amount about the energy markets and how BP interacts with them. Had unprecedented access to huge amounts of information and knowledge which was passed onto me. A truly brilliant experience and certainly enjoyed it more that I would have ever expected - high recommended internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued, especially because the work I did allowed for more conversations with people. As a result, I could develop a great amount of confidence and rapport with individuals to express my views. The key is to get along with people in the firm and this was certainly easy at BP.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support given at all levels, my line manager (direct report) although very busy, was always happy to help explain things to me and support my learning overall. HR were very accessible and a friendly face to answer all questions that I had. Overall, everyone at the firm is there to help support your learning and they are keen to offer a hand.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • By choice, I was busy at most times but given the freedom to structure my day as I wanted. The hours are very reasonable and your team just expect you to get your work done and to do it well. I would try to network amongst the firm as much as possible and employees were very open to this.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Given so much access to BP information and allowed to build my confidence/knowledge in parallel. Depending on the team you are in, you may be drafted in to help with daily or weekly tasks which are essential for the teams to use in their analysis (to base their corporate decisions on).

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I shall take a huge amount of technical skills - for example, my excel skills in being able to create macros and code will help me in the future. I even did economic regressions which I do at university, hence it was a huge help to be able to use it at the firm. Soft skills learning is brilliant, as you learn how to interact with all people too.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Atmosphere depends mostly on your team. The main floors with traders are naturally louder and quite exciting. In general, the atmosphere is very conducive to your learning as people are always keen to talk to you or help you with your projects. It's important to develop a skill in understanding when people are free and you should read their body language to see if its an appropriate time to talk.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Organisation was very good overall. HR were always ready well in advance for events (e.g senior networking, socials or training sessions). The internship was quite fluid, meaning you are given a lot of freedom to spend the time as you wish and there is an emphasis that you try to understand as much about the business and other areas as possible.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Yes, very much so with many teaching opportunities and external events. People were brought in to help you develop your excel technical skills and also presentation skills. We were also taught about how to interact with different people across the firm (personality types etc). There were incredible opportunities to meet with very senior individuals at BP too.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Looks very positive, especially with the current market (many firms have unknowns with Brexit etc). I look forward to the opportunities and employment prospects that exist at BP because it is a major energy company that will grow, adapt and expand to the world's future energy needs. Renewable energy is a huge area for development and BP will be placed well for the market.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • Most interns were very keen to go out socialising but this only happened when they would push to get everyone together. There are opportunities to socialise through BP too (ie paint balling, community day, dinner etc) so I would just see what the group of interns are like and then take it from there.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Canary Wharf, London is naturally expensive but its only for 11 weeks. You are getting paid for your time so you can cover your expenses. Of course, you can spend as much or as little as you like - hence the area is only as expensive as you make it.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • You're in London. You have access to anything and everything that you want. So whatever you're into, there's something available for you. You can get anywhere within 30 minutes of the office, which is very ideal becauase you can leave the office and do whatever you like after the office - nothing more to say!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were community days and some socials organised with all the interns across the firm. I feel like there could be a few more socials organised and also earlier on would have been better (this was only done 5/6 weeks into the internship). I would advise that you push yourself to become friendly with everyone, regardless.
