About You
It was a really useful activity that helped me explore a career that i'm very interested in, it provided me with so much more than just asking an intern what they do as I got to see the specifics of a day to day working life.
I was contacted a few weeks beforehand by the intern and we kept in touch. I was given as much detail as possible about the day and when i arrived I was welcomed immediately. I really felt like they valued me and that they were as interested in me as I was in them.
It was quite an interesting experience, I was given the freedom of being able to ask as many questions as possible and have a look around the company whilst also being given a lot of guidance on the day to day life and the application process.
The information I received was second to none, it has helped me focus on things i need to work on to make sure i'm employable as possible. This is something i can carry on to different interviews and work places.
The Company
From the moment I knew i was accepted onto his scheme everything was well planned. I had contact with my intern who clued me in on the plans for the day. This went very smoothly on arrival and the day had no issues.
All the interns i was introduced to were very friendly and understanding. I felt like they really wanted to help me and answer all of my many questions.
There was no training as per but i was given lots of information about the schemes that interns could get themselves onto (online excel training etc) to improve their skills in the work place.
being able to shadow an intern meant I got to see what day to day life was actually like for them instead of just reading a job description. They were able to answer my queries and show me what work and projects they had gotten involved in. The only down side is I felt like one day just wasn't enough.
The company seems to have a very friendly atmosphere. People are expected to work hard but in return they have a lot of freedom and the company always make sure to sure their appreciation.
It really helped me to realize that the career path i'm interested in is actually for me. I confirmed what i already knew and also learnt a lot more in the process. I now am very sure of the career i want to go into and how i should go about doing that.
Everything Else
BP made sure to hand me and expense form on the day so i could claim back my (very expensive!) train tickets but also paid for our meal in a nice restaurant for lunch too!
Unfortunately there just wasn't enough time in the day to get to meet very many people outside of the interns. As lovely as they all were it would have been useful, in my opinion, to meet people who have been there for a longer period of time to get their insight into the company.
Again, as this opportunity was only a one day event there wasn't many options in terms of social events. However I managed to make some good contacts with other interns (finding each other on linked in) and other people who were there to shadow.
There seems to be a lot of activities going on outside of work that employees get involved in. There is a gym that's discounted for employees and there are quite a few company sports teams which seem to be very popular.
I would 100% recommend this to anyone who wants a further look into a career they may be interested in as it will either confirm that it's for you or help you realize there are other things you may want to be doing.
