About You
Everyone was very friendly and encouraging. Help was offered when i needed and plenty of information and assistance was given to any questions that arose. I learnt a lot just in one day shadowing and got a clearer picture of what it would be like to work there that i could not have gained otherwise. Information about other internships and job roles was also shared which was very useful
Even though my role was very minor throughout the day people made me feel my opinion was valued and showed the company would be a friendly place to work in the future. The company provided lunch, travel expenses and free tea and coffee which made it feel like a treat to experience what it would be like to work there.
Talks and conference calls were arranged throughout the day so any questions could be asked to more senior members. There was support from staff with a range of experience; ranging from interns, post-graduates and more senior workers which helped provide a more rounded view of the different levels of work and what BP could offer at each stage
The aim of the day was to get insight to future opportunities that BP could offer. This experience could not have been achieved online or at a talk as it showed what it would be like to actually work there. This helped me decide whether i would strive for a longer internship or a graduate job there in the future as they provided lots of useful information about their available schemes
The Company
Throughout the entire day there were lots of talks and presentations arranged which provided further information to the company, every day working life and what you could expect if you got a post graduate job there. Conference calls and lunchtime meetings with senior members were arranged, enabling us to have a question and answer session which was very useful.
the atmosphere was extremely friendly and staff made an effort to engage actively with interns offering them help and guidance when needed. We were encouraged to ask questions and not made to feel intimidated or uncomfortable at any point. Lunch and tea and coffee were included which helped create a good atmosphere.
At this stage i was only shadowing an intern for the day so no investments by the company were made but it did encourage me to apply for future internships and graduate jobs where further investments in my future career would be made and more opportunities would be available and more skills would be learnt. However at this stage there was little training or development apart from insight
The company provided a very clear image of what future work there would be like. It provided a clearer image of the working environment such as social activities, job and internship opportunities and roles throughout the company rather than what actual job tasks and assignments were as these were all highly individualised and may have been classified
The insight helped me discover a lot about what it would be like to actually work there. Information was provided that would not have been conveyed as usefully if it had not been in person as the BP website is useful but actual personal experience in the company is far better and useful and it is more hands on than any other approach
The content of the day was very useful in helping me decide on my future career path as it showed me the different opportunities and jobs that could be available to me and how it would be to actually work there. It definitely encouraged me to apply for internships in the future whether they were with BP or another company, and eventually a graduate job.
Everything Else
There was the option to be reimbursed any travel expenses that may have occurred when receipts were provided. We were also provided lunch which included a large choice of drinks, snacks, cooked food, international food and salad bar choices- giving an option for everyone. There was also free tea, coffee and water available throughout the day so all our food and drink was provided.
Yes, we went to a lunch time talk which was run be a more senior colleague and many other internships and shadows attended, giving us a chance to meet each other and gain more insight. In the afternoon there was a conference call with a senior member of the Human Resources department which showed what it was like to work at the company at a more senior level and more insight to HR as a department
Throughout the day there were were not any networking opportunities for shadows but once you gain an internship of place as a graduate at the company there are plenty of ways to network with fellow colleagues and lunch time talks and the emailing and messaging system was utilised to interact with people from different areas with different roles.
There were fitness and sports clubs available for workers both within units and outside as a whole. They sounded fun and easy to get involved in such as boxing classes and a gym on site (Sunbury) was available for employee use. BP actively encourages employees to get involved in fitness and the social side of work creating a really friendly, healthy atmosphere
Yes i would definitely recommend this internship to a friend as it provided me valuable insight into day to day work, it showed me what opportunities were available to me and it only lasted a day so it was short and to the point and helped me explore what i could possibly do in the future for a longer period of time within the company
