    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The Shadow an Intern day was illuminating and very enjoyable to speak with someone just a year ahead of me rather than all experienced engineers. I think that was an important factor to the success of the day, it's easy for a professional to forget your level of experience and expertise and expect too much from you, which would result in getting lost, but the Intern knew my experience well without having to wonder.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt fairly valued that the company would spend the money it took to get me from Aberdeen to London for a one-day experience (they seemed impressed that I was willing to wake up so early and attend as well!), it's not many companies that would find it worth giving such an experience to potential future talent, preferring to simply offer an internship when they have reached a later age.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Plenty of guidance was offered, the entire process of the Wells sector of the oil and gas industry was explained perfectly as well as how the particular section the Intern was working on was relevant. The structure of the mammoth company that is BP was relatively well explained also, and discussing my interests, the Intern was able to suggest the sector to which I should apply.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The information I received was very successful in opening my mind to the various sectors within the oil and gas industry, from oil trading to drilling to completions to refining to procurement, understanding the whole picture is important for any potential engineer. Advice about the process of applying for an internship at BP was valuable.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The day was well timetabled in advance, all the interns were of course busy with their own work but time was made to work with me the entire day and have a fine view of several of the key aspects. Interviews with interns from different departments were also arranged. Overall a very well structured day.

    3/5

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • All the interns were much the same as me except a year ahead, the atmosphere was thus like spending time with friends which made the office lights less intimidating. Everyone was very helpful and generous with their time, with nobody too busy to offer me any advice on anything I wanted to know.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • N/A

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The day did very well to indicate what a full time job with the company would be like, with the hours, the pay, the travel required and the holiday activities well detailed, as well as the leisure activities that one could get involved in within the company.

    5/5

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • A lot of emphasis was placed on BP's core values and how each employee, client or contractor must adhere to them and how they were linked to performance. The culture of BP was one I found to be very focused on safety, with their own standards exceeding those imposed by governing bodies, respect was also a very important aspect.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • In a way it was rather unhelpful, but only in that the myriad of options available to me were made clearer and this made the decision on my future career path a harder one, but thankfully a much more informed one thanks to the terrific advice given by current employees and Interns alike.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • The Intern I worked with had worked hard to make sure I could meet with all the current interns and have an insight into a day as an intern, as well as meet current employees and discuss their work with them as well as my thoughts on my future and where it lies within BP.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • N/A

    3/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • BP not only give Interns an insight into activities outside of work but actively give them an opportunity to get involved in the organization and execution of such activities. They ranged from a sports league within the site to organising and volunteering in community events in the city.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would easily recommend this day to a friend as it was eye-opening, informative, and enjoyable. Every engineer studying currently should take every opportunity they can to experience as many fields within their discipline as possible to better inform their career decisions, and this BP Shadow an Intern day is one of the best.
