    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The week was very packed with a lot of activities for us to take part in. It was very varied and highly enjoyable. We were given lunch allowances daily and everyday had a different type of activity for us to partake in. We also got a chance to go on a trip to Pangbourne where the fuels and lubricants section of the company was. We had a tour of the labs and facilities and also an insight day with graduates. On the final day, we had a paid dinner with the rest of the Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs and other BP engineers, overall, it was a very enjoyable experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • To a great extent. The entire team was very welcoming and they answered our questions openly and honestly. I never felt like I was wasting their time will my many queries. The entire team was very well-prepared for our arrival and they really dedicated a lot of time and effort to make us feel welcome. We were also given contact details of the BP engineers and encouraged to get in touch if we had any questions.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • A lot. The organisers have kept in touch with us to ensure we had all the right information to apply for internships/placements. During the week, we had a whole day dedicated to receiving advice from the recruiters about applications as well as presentations from graduate engineers at BP. We also took part in an interactive trade game which allowed us to bond with our teams and learn from each other. We had a mock interview session with another graduate recruiter and this helped us see our strengths and weaknesses and how we could perform better at interviews.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • At the end of the insight week, we had to give a presentation on what we had learnt during the week and this experience really allowed me to develop my presentation skills. We were introduced to a wide range of different types of roles within engineering and how our degrees could be applied to these various roles. I now have a greater appreciation for my degree especially the design project in 3rd year as it really helps to develop skills that would be useful in an engineering firm such as BP.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Very well-structured, we were introduced to our mentors a few days before the insight week which allowed us to ask any questions we had before hand and also get an insight into the areas our mentors worked in before arriving. All the events and activities planned for us were well-prepared and everyone was very welcoming. Security badges and lunch cards were provided on the day and there was a coach to take us to Sunbury and back to the station everyday. Although it took a while for them to let us know we had gotten a place on the programme

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The overall atmosphere was great and everyone we met seemed to really enjoy their jobs and the challenges involved. It is definitely a company I can see myself working in sometime in the future as they really value their employees and puts safety as a top priority. The week had a good balance of fun and 'serious' events and the variety of activities was useful to get a good overview of the company culture and people.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Since this was only for a week, we didn't really get any training courses (as it was unnecessary) however, in terms of money, time and effort, they did a really good job. We were given free lunches, access to the buildings and also our own personal mentor working in a specific area of the company- we had 2 days dedicated to employee shadowing and we could ask as many questions as we wanted.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • A great deal, I had a chance to listen to presentations from different kind of engineers and speak to them about their experiences. We were shown the drilling simulator, given a tour of the different facilities and labs to get a good overview of the company and the areas we could potentially be working in if we joined as graduates. We also had a chance to speak to some graduates as well as older employees

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • From the week, I got a good sense of BP and how they value their employees. they also value things like safety as a top priority and really put their people at the heart of what they do. A longer internship will allow me understand the company culture better but from the week, it was clear that they valued their employees and managed to balance work with play.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Very valuable. Like I mentioned before, listening to presentations about the different types of engineering one could do as well as the various paths people had taken to get there was very useful. I had not considered doing a masters in reservoir engineering before but it is now something I am thinking about. The variety of roles and opportunities to work at home and abroad was highlighted also.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was not paid for the week but expenses for travel to and from Feltham was reimbursed for the entire week.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, everyday was an opportunity to network- not just with employees but with other Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs on the programme. Through the various presentations, tours and activities, I was able to get round to speaking to various employees at different stages of their careers

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Very good, they were open and honest and did not feel intimidating at all. The social event was also very well-planned and organised. It was fully paid for by the company and we had other employees join us as well. They were all really nice and willing to share their experiences with us and give us advice.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Not as much as I would have liked. Besides the travelling opportunities at home and abroad, I would have liked to find out about things like volunteering opportunities which a lot of companies encourage nowadays. Nevertheless, the atmosphere during the week definitely showed that employees could take part in activities outside work with company support. They could do further study, take career breaks, maternity/paternity leave, etc

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes, I found it extremely enjoyable and useful. I made many new friends and contacts that have proven useful already and if I had the chance to stay for longer, I definitely would. It was a good balance of everything- work and play and the networking opportunities were superb. They put in a lot of efforts to make us feel comfortable- even reimbursing us for travel expenses and I really appreciated that.
