About You
I very much enjoyed the Discovery Day at BP. We covered a range of different business roles within the organisation from HR to Procurement. We also heard from speakers at various levels in their career at BP who each clearly loved their time at there. There was also a really fun and insightful energy game based around making decisions as a team.
Everyone from BP that we met, whether they were directly involved in running the day or just passing by, was always happy to see us, talk to us and help us with any questions we had. The atmosphere is very welcoming and diverse which also helps you feel welcome and at ease.
There was always an opportunity to ask questions and we were guided through a quick review of everything we should have learnt after every segment of the day. There was also a focus on application tips towards the end which was very open and useful. The group wasn't very big so everyone received personal attention.
Being an insight day, there was not much to learn that would directly assist me in my degree studies. However, in terms of applying for an internship or any other undergraduate opportunities, the application advise (both general and BP specific) was invaluable. Also as ever with activities where you work in a team and have the opportunity to speak to a group of people, you have a chance to develop team work skills and confidence.
The Company
I think the insight was very well structured. The whole thing ran like clock work. We were told exactly what we would be doing throughout the day at the start. We started and finished on time and got through everything that was planned. There was no indication of anything being rushed either.
I found the atmosphere to be very professional and prestigious but at the same time relaxed and fun. I don't think I saw anyone with a frown or angry throughout the day. All the interns and graduates gave glowing reviews of their time so far at the company. I got the impression that it was a very stress free environment.
My idea of what it would be like to work at the company completely changed after the Discovery Day. Many companies claim to have fun environments and amazing things but actually seeing what it was like myself gave weight to all the good claims made on the internet and at careers fairs. And with any company, there is only so much you can get from reading a company's website.
The content of the day was very valuable in helping me decide on my future career path. I am trying to decide if I want to go into an engineering role or something more commercial. The Mixed Business insight day gave me a lot of exposure to the commercial roles which is something you don't often associate BP with.
Everything Else
BP generously reimburses all expenses if you provide evidence of them being incurred after the event. This includes things like travel (train, tube, taxi and even car) as well as a night's accommodation if your travel exceeds four hours I think it was. They also provide lunch and refreshments free throughout the day.
There were many opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company. We met people from lots of different sectors of the company as well as people at various levels of seniority from interns to 10+ year veterans. Everyone was willing to answer any questions we had and was very happy to see us.
Yes I would definitely recommend BP's Discovery Day to a friend. The insight was very enjoyable as well as informative. I got more than I expected out of the day and had no questions unanswered about working as an intern at BP. The event is also free of charge and all costs are reimbursed which also make it a very worthwhile event to attend.
