The Role
I have really enjoyed my summer internship at the firm, everything from the events organised for the interns, to the project I was working on, to meeting and working alongside my team and getting exposure to new technologies has really made my experience a memorable one, I would definitely recommend it to other 西瓜视频s!
I felt that my voice within the team and my contributions in team meetings and on my project were greatly appreciated by my colleagues. Having been given responsibility from day 1 to plan my project from scratch using technologies the team where no familiar with, the research I conducted and shared with the team was invaluable in getting their feedback as to any potential pitfalls they could see. This ultimately helped me to create a more robust product.
When you are at the firm you are assigned a buddy who is normally someone in your team who you can use for guidance on how to setup your local environment and ask any questions you may have. You are also assigned a mentor from another team in the firm to provide you with guidance from outside your immediate team on any questions you have. Alongside my manager this formed a key network where I could get different advice, support and guidance during my time with the firm. I found this very helpful when preparing for presentations and key project milestones.
I had a busy schedule every day, this involved things like daily team meetings, intern events, senior leadership talks, working on my project, and networking events. No two days were the same and this meant that I was able to learn as much as possible in a short amount of time. I felt that by having good time management skills and prioritising my workload I was able to stay on top of everything!
I was given a lot of responsibility in my team. Having to develop a branch new application from scratch meant that I had to follow the whole SDLC within a short time frame. This meant creating aggressive timelines for my project and doing everything from gathering requirements, to designing the system architecture, developing the solution, testing it end to end and then deploying it and providing support documentation. As my project had a real world impact and was going to help the team become more productive in measuring trends in their environment it was of great importance to the senior leaders in the business unit that my application was developed well.
The skills I have developed, particularly my improved technical skills such as programming and system architecture will definitely have a positive effect on my final year at university. I have learnt principles from the training courses that are provided for the interns that will benefit me in my future development such as how to write clean code and leverage new technologies effectively. This will benefit me in my career beyond university as technology is always changing and I will need to be proactive in learning new technologies in order to progress in my career.
The Company
The atmosphere within the office was great and getting to know people on my floor was a real highlight of my internship. There is a good comradery across all of the teams and in my team we often had breaks from our work where we catch up on what people have been up to and had a good laugh.
The internship was flawlessly set up and run, from the induction day to the leaving social every event ran perfectly. There was a range of events organised, such as senior leadership breakfasts, to senior speaker talks, an intern team challenge, and a community teamwork day to name a few. There was also sessions weekly that were organised for interns to go and ask senior technologist about any issues they were having on their projects. I know a lot of interns found this extremely helpful.
The firm invests heavily in your development; you are assigned training courses to complete upon joining the firm which teaches you about the best practises for working at the firm. There are also several internal resources that you can use to develop your skills further and these provide an invaluable resource to reference when developing your project. In terms of personal development I felt that getting continuous feedback from my colleagues on things I was working on was really helped me to develop my skills.

Future employment prospects at the firm are really attractive, as there is a dedicated program structure for graduates. Having spoken to recent graduates I have heard that the training they receive is excellent, alongside a large exposure to senior leaders with good opportunities to progressive your career in the direction and role you are looking for. Further to this the support networks within the firm offer an invaluable resource to learn from professionals who are more experienced than you, this is something I found helpful on the internship.
The Culture
There is a great social scene amongst the fellow interns, being in London you are close to the shops, bars, parks and it is really easy to organise lunch with each other or drinks after work. Everyone is friendly and approachable so it is easy to expand your network and find out about people鈥檚 backgrounds.
I lived at home just outside of the M25, so the price of living for me was very little. The commute into the office took me roughly an hour and was costing me roughly five pound a journey. The price of socialising in London is more expensive that other areas of the UK, but you can find places that are relatively cheap and still have a great atmosphere.
Being in London the nightlife is very good, you can travel to any club very easily using the tube and with the night tube you can still get home okay. The interns tend to organise nights out together so you all end up going to the same place which is fun.
The firm has several sports teams you can register for, I joined the cricket team who played matches in the evenings after work and had a team social at the end of the season to celebrate. Further to this you are encouraged to use the state of the art gym facilities and step away from your desk. There are also professional networks you can join that hold events you can attend.
