The Role
Amazing experience On one hand, you are given work as if you were a full-time analyst and on the other hand, you have the opportunity to attend senior speaker conferences, group activities etc..
You are considered as a full time analyst therefore, people take time to explain you the job. I felt really highly valued by my colleagues, even by the more senior ones
During the internship, you are a assigned a personal buddy (Analyst), a mentor (Associate) and a VP-Sponsor. You get good guidance for your day-to-day work by your junior buddy / mentor and you can get long-term advice from your Mentor / VP Sponsor
I think I was as busy as a full time analyst working in Finance during the summer. The workload I was given was significant but still manageable - certainly because the M&A and Financing activities do not peak in the summer
You are given as much responsibility as you can take. I learnt to model during my previous internship so I was given some tasks about it - on top of the basic tasks an analyst is given. I felt I could have been given the lead on the model if I had stayed for a longer period
The training you get must be really useful for those who haven't studied finance. However, I think you learn more on the desk - you get used to pay more attention to details, to work in a team, communicate and of course you tend to understand more easily how the financial industry works
The Company
The atmosphere was very positive, teamwork and performance oriented. It was great to work on this floor
There is a dedicated team of HRs who are in charge of the recruitment, the conferences and activities the summer interns do. Everything was really perfect
I believe GS invests a lot in its young bankers - the vast majority of senior bankers at GS started their career in the firm. For example, analysts and associates are sent several weeks in NYC for a traning
Company Car
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I hope I can come back next year - probably the best place to start one's career in finance
The Culture
Yes, we were a 80-people promotion only in Investment Bank Division so there is room for socializing. The first week is only training so it gives time to meet your fellow interns
London is really expensive but the salary offsets this
You usually stay late during the week but people usually leave earlier on Friday. On top of that, nobody comes to the office on a saturday (or only for exceptions). It gives room for nighlife which is great because London is an amazing city
Limited as you may think - this is after all a very demanding job and you can't expect to do too many things outside of work. However, Saturday rule is a very good thing and you know you'll get at least one day off during the week
