    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It is a fantastic opportunity to explore the inner workings of a large corporation and learn the true challenges of the job, though due to the size of the company, change may not be as fast as that of a start up! But things are moving forward and NO DRESSCODE!

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I really liked my team members. They were fantastic and very supportive, especially my manager, who took on board some of the things I suggested and implemented them. They have answered my questions and taught me many new debugging techniques.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • She was very attentive and did her best with the little time we had! My manager set challenging tasks for me, but she also listened to any suggestions I might have had.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It is less mental then University, at least for me. You can focus solely on the tasks you need to complete. There are also a lot of events for interns, so you get regular breaks. I worked 9-5 exactly and never felt overwhelmed by the tasks. I worked in a semi-agile team and any tasks I could not complete for any reason were taken on by my other colleagues.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Well, my code is already in production. This makes me quite proud. I was invited to participate in all the meetings and daily stand-ups. I suppose I was treated as they would any new (not-so-very-experienced) team member. I had to plan out my project, it`s implementation and set goals . I was also a participant in the retrospectives and planning poker that my colleagues used to make decisions and delegate tasks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I gained would be invaluable, especially learning hoe to debug a large application with multiple dependencies. I also learned a lot about JavaScript development and working with Maven.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very open and friendly atmosphere. Free coffee too! Generally everyone is easily approachable and supportive. I have been invited to many social events that my colleagues. Also a ton of banter!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Pretty much all the events were well organised, with the exception of the hackathon, as there were not a lot of experts available for us to ask questions and a lot of the instructions were unclear. Also accessing the required tools was not always possible, so my team had 1 computer for 5 people.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There is a great deal of support for personal and career development. There are seminars, networking events, socials, trainings, etc . available for us to find the best things in the company. There is also a great deal of flexibility and if you do not like your current position, it could easily be changed. You may be in a project that you do not like, but you can be changed to something you like better. They do their best to accommodate people.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am very interested in coming back in the company as a graduate and working here for the foreseeable future! I was concerned that since it is a bank, I would have to wear business clothes all the time, but it turns out that in our office the dress code is quite relaxed and I was quite happy in my jeans and sneakers. Had there been a business dress code I would not have wanted to go back, but now it is great.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • There are a lot of interns and we also get connected to graduates. We not only had events organised for all of us, but we also were invited to go to a women in technology events, which help women especially to cope with a predominantly male environment. I made new friends and acquaintances and truly felt as part of the team. There is a lot of opportunity to network with senior management as well.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Glasgow is a relatively cheap city. I was already living here so there were no additional expenses associated with my living.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Glasgow has plenty of pubs, clubs and restaurants. Also my fellow interns and I went to see "Rocky Horros" in Kings theatre and it was lovely. Also Edinburgh is not too far and the fringe is awesome to visit.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We had a lot of events organized as well as organising ourselves to do the colour run. We were invited to contribute to society by helping in a community garden, which was a lot of fun! I feel proud of the plants I planted and hope that they will survive. I will go back to the charity after my internship is finished to see if I can help out!
