The Role
Overall, I did enjoy my time at JP Morgan. It allowed me to enhance my skills as a software developer. I enjoyed being able to work in a team with a larger project, in which I had my own smaller personal project that was important for the greater whole as well.
I feel I got on well with the members of my team, with whom I would take part in meetings every day, meaning that there were never any days in which I felt isolated as part of the team. However, I could have done more on my own part to engage with them more than I did.
By having frequent team meetings including my manager, as well as numerous one-to-one meetings as well. I always felt like I could rely on my manager whenever an issue was encountered. The feedback provided was of extreme benefit to me as well. I could have taken more advantage of this than I did.
On the whole, I was fairly busy every day, with only minor droughts of productivity. I was given a clear high-level overview of the project I was given when I joined the team, broken down into smaller components if necessary as well, meaning that I always had an idea of where to progress. However, there were the occasional days where I got little done, but these were mostly outside of my control.
I was given a fairly significant project to work on, with the assistance of a full-time employee of the company to work on. This project involved analysis and comparisons of potential systems to use inside this project, as well as a lot of Java and Spring development. It never felt like the goal of the project was just to distract me, but was something the team would benefit from after I leave.
JP Morgan provided countless opportunities to learn various skillsets and improve my development skills. Access to resources such as Pluralsight meant that I was able to acellerate my learning of technology like AngularJS, which will be beneificial in my degree. I will also benefit from the exposure to more professional project management, in comparison to previous Univeristy projects.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was pleasant. There was plenty of light in the office, and everyone had enough space to do their work as well.
The internship was well set up, outside of one event (which was in someone else's control). On the first way we were given a calender outlining various events we would be partaking in, and we were always given plenty of time to prepare for these events as well.
The company invested fairly strong in me I would say. Being given multiple avenues for enhancing my development skills, in addition to the training regarding business side of JP Morgan's operations as well meant that I felt like they were putting a lot of investment into my development as well.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
The internship does allow for future recruitment in the graduate scheme, with plenty of options in location and line of business available to you as well.
The Culture
In addition to the events organised as part of the internship, there was a healthy social scene amongst the interns themselves. It was very easy to meet up with a group of people and go someplace if desired.
Glasgow has plenty of places to socialise in at a reasonable price. I cannot comment on the cost of living.
Glasgow has a very active nightlife, with multiple places available to go to. From nightclubs to pubs in addition to places like King's Theatre, there are many options for nightlife available to an intern/
We were given some communication from groups in the company regarding activities outside of work, such as hillwalking
