The Role
Great experience, good balance of intern events and actual workload.
Incredibly helpful and encouraging colleagues, could ask any question and they would all give me the time necessary to help solve issues
Manager kept track of my progress and was willing to help where possible, but normally pointed to someone with more experience who was always happy to help guide through problems
Never a dull moment, maybe a little too much work expected, but happy with the project received
My internship began with small tasks such as automating certain things within the team to save people time. This also served the roll of teaching me how the software worked and how everything was linked together. Half way through the internship I was given a larger project that I know will be used in the future for my team and beyond, built from the ground up with assistance from more experienced colleagues.
Used a dozen or so technologies/tools at my time here, only one I had used or heard of before was java.
The Company
Building was technology only, meaning there was not any business people in the area. This helped create a more relaxed atmosphere in the building as everyone you talk to should understand what you talk about. Was not expected to stay behind or work through my break as one might think with the reputation of the banking sector. Casual dress code!
Could do with more information before starting the internship about the team and projects that I would be working on. The training to complete before the internship was dull compared to the training completed after the internship has started, where we got to talk to specialists or ex-traders for more information. The training after starting was very informative, whilst not all of it being necessary for certain positions, having a good overall picture is helpful.
If desired there are a large amount of training courses available. As a Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ the staff knew I wouldn't know everything and the project timeline took into account time to learn and make mistakes as I progressed. There were online meetings with senior members of management (CEO, directors) explaining how important we are to the firm, the direction they want the firm to take. Felt very valued.

A large amount of interns on the summer placement should receive offers at the end of the internship (or so I've been told). From talking to graduates who went through the internship scheme and stayed on, if you were good enough to pass the assessment center to get a job, you should be good enough to continue on as a graduate.
The Culture
Interns come from around Europe to attend this placement, this results in a lot of people not knowing anyone when they arrive meaning plenty of opportunities to make new friends to hang out with if so desired. This year there was a large amount of interns so could easily be doing something every week with other interns if you were willing to organise it. People arranged frequently to go out for drinks after work or after company arranged social events.
Cost of living and socialising in glasgow is relatively low compared to the price in areas such as London / Edinburgh. Can get temporary Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ housing over the summer at universities halls / 3rd party Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ accommodation, or if willing to travel further can get cheaper accommodation <1hr away from the location. Rent can range from 250-500 depending on what you're willing to spend.
The office is in the city center of Glasgow, meaning there is plenty of nightlife available. Dozens of pubs within a minute or two of the workplace, and plenty of clubs and more pubs within walking distance as well. Wide arrange of places to eat nearby from fast food greggs to fancier burger and tapas joints depending on what takes your fancy as well, being glasgow there is also plenty of chippies/fast food places.
There were plenty of opportunities for activities outside of work. The company arranged a few social events with complementary drinks/food for interns. As well as interns arranging events among themselves such as theater shows, hill walking etc. If you want to do something in particular there would almost definitely be people willing to join.
