The Role
The internship placement at JP Morgan helped me to improve my professional skills (communication, technical), whilst giving me real responsibilities (albeit with the benefit of a support network).
People in the company are generally receptive to your working needs, and the majority of my team made an effort to help me to integrate. Some people are perhaps less quick to repond to an intern than they would be a full member of staff, and this can require good organizational skills in order to make sure they allow time for you.
I was given a good amount of support, although at times guidance was given in dribs and drabs. Everyone else on my team were busy at times, and it can be frustrating when you cannot progress with work because of a lack of understanding, particularly in the first few weeks.
This varied substantially. The work was largely project based, and so this in part came down to my efficiency. The majority of the time I had enough work to last the entire working day.
Considering that I was only in the company for 10 weeks, I was given more responsibility than most. I led a global refresh of the firms Business Continuity Plans, which involved leading a team of vice presidents on weekly teleconferences to compile the data.
I have learnt a substantial amount about financial products, which will help me in future positions within the financial industry. The experience of working in a professional environment will also help me moving forward.
The Company
The atmosphere was pretty relaxed, with most people arriving at 8.30am and leaving at just past 5pm. Senior employees tend to be occupied for the vast majority of the day on calls, and can be difficult to get time with. I was allowed to take an hour to go for a run in the middle of the day, and how people worked their work hours (i.e. come in early, leave early) was fairly relaxed.
The internship was well organized. The only qualm I had would be that seeking alternative opportunities outside the Bournemouth office was quite strongly discouraged.
As an intern, I had access to all the online training programme's available at JP Morgan. The company also put on a 3 day training program at the start, although this was quite disappointing.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Future prospects are very appealing. JP Morgan is a huge company which offers many potential careers.
The Culture
Yes, the interns went out for social events most weekends.
Rent = c.£130pw. Clubs and drinks were typical prices for the South of England. Food on JP Campus was affordable (roughly £5 for lunch).
Average
Yes, a number of sports societies and events are held outside working hours. I played in a 5 a side league on a Monday, as well as getting involved in Rounder's and Volleyball tournaments.
