    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • There were good and bad parts of the internship. The company is very inclusive and diverse, has a great reputation, and has a lot of guidance for interns. The people that work here are, for the most part, very friendly and willing to help. However, the particular work that I have been doing is not a good fit for me. Whilst I enjoyed working at the company, I did not particularly enjoy doing the job that I did.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility once I had proven that I was able to take on the work and showed initiative to do more. They expected me to produce good work, and when I did they were very clear in their appreciation of my work. I definitely felt that they valued my contributions to the team during my time here. The only downside was that I did not have the knowledge of the niche systems and products that the team uses so I was not able to contribute as much as I would have, had I had that knowledge.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager has been extremely helpful and supportive throughout the entire internship. I had regular feedback meetings with her and we had an excellent level of communication. I understood clearly what she expected of me and what my assignments were. I believe this is true of most of the management in the firm; they are all supportive to the team and happy to help.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My particular team worked in a very specialized part of the firm, and required a lot of specific knowledge about the clients and the products. Therefore, coming in as a new intern with no prior exposure to working in an investment bank, my team found it difficult to assign me tasks that kept me busy. I finished work quickly and therefore had many things to do but also a lot of free time - apparently it is a rarity to have as much spare time as I did in this internship.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning, I had very little responsibility. However, as I grew into the role, my team gave me more responsibility as I proved I could handle it. My manager went on holiday and I was given many of the tasks she would have otherwise completed. It was a good amount of responsibility for an intern but not too much, as I was only here for 10 weeks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I worked a lot with Excel, which will be very helpful for future analytical work in my career. However, while J.P. Morgan is an investment bank, I expected to learn more about the financial products and processes; instead, because it is such a large firm, each person is very specialized in their own product or service - I ended up not learning so much about finance but more about the particular tech systems that clients use. I would have liked to learn more pure finance rather than such a niche system unique to the company. Other than that knowledge, I developed more transferrable skills like communication with team members and time management that will be more helpful in other areas of my career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The area in which I sat was always moving around and busy. It was a good atmosphere, although sometimes was a bit tense. Overall, the atmosphere was friendly and collaborative, and an appropriate level of busy-ness and movement. The atmosphere tends to differ by floor or team.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The company accommodates hundreds of summer interns every year, and are typically very efficient at doing so. Each line of business has its own HR representative that personally knows each of their respective interns. HR is always friendly and helpful, and are very organised as well. They always organise different networking events or drop in sessions so that the interns can get the best experience possible. However, sometimes they are not the most clear in their communication of what is compulsory, what is expected of us, etc. On the other hand, if you have questions they are happy to answer and always respond quickly.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • It is clear that the company cares about our personal development and invests many resources to helping us progress professionally and with the firm. We have many networking sessions with graduates, senior directors, and others throughout the internship.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • From the beginning, my manager was very clear about what she expected from me. We also did many feedback sessions so that we could keep on track with each other. Because of this, it was easy to understand how to perform well within the team, and they were supportive and wanted me to do the best that I could. There is a formal mid-internship review, so that everyone knows if they are on track for an offer, and is helpful because then you know where exactly you stand with your manager. The firm wants the interns to succeed and invest a lot of time in the interns because they want to recruit the best graduates for the job.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • From the start it was easy to make friends with the other interns. HR made it clear that we were not competing against each other, but rather should be working together to try to improve and develop within our teams. In my line of business, there were only a few interns and we all got along. It is easy to socialise during lunch or after work, so we got to know each other well throughout the ten weeks. Additionally, it is easy to make friends with other interns outside of your specific line of business - we all had training together and see each other often!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is extremely expensive compared to the rest of the country, so it is quite costly to go out a lot/

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf doesn't really have much nightlife, it is very much a clean, working area. However, London is home to many different areas and scenes that fit many tastes.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I play football at uni, and right from the start of the internship there was information on getting involved with the company football team. The team was very welcoming and it was great to get plugged in to more of the culture of the firm. Not only are there sports teams, there are also diversity and inclusion groups that host many activities for members.
