About You
I really enjoyed the insight day as it provided me with the opportunity to understand more about what a job within the company could entail through listening to talks from current employees and Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs undertaking a placement year. It was interesting to visit the centre for learning to see how operators are trained.
During my time at the company I felt valued as a visitor as the day's schedule had been thoroughly planned. It was easy to ask employees working at the company questions as they were very approachable and at the networking lunch I enjoyed chattting to employees in different sectors of the company.
During the insight we received lots of support on various sections of the application process which I found highly useful. We were guided through the appliction process and were able to compare applications that had been accepted with ones which had been discarded. We were also given the oppportunity to practise our interview skills.
The information I received was highly useful in assisting me in my degree studies as it enabled me to have a deeper insight into the purpose of learning the current modules in my discipline. The interview practise was also very useful as it gave me an understanding of how to structure my answers and an insight into the types of questions I could be asked.
The Company
The insight day was very well structured as the schedule had been thoroughly planned and the times were kept to ensure the day ran smoothly. The day had been carefully structured to enable us to visit various areas of the company and gain a real understanding of what it would be like to work for BP.
During the insight day the general atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. The day was ran quite informlly as it was clear that the purpose of the day was to allow us to develop a greater understanding of the company. We were therefore able to ask questions freely throughout and everyone was very approachable.
In terms of my personal training and development, I felt the company felt invested in my development in understanding what it would be like to become a petrochemical engineer. They also invested time in helping me to understand the application process and what it entails so I am now more able to write a better application answer.
Within the short time frame I had at the company I was able to gain a good insight into what it would be like to have a full time role within the company. This was because I was given the opportunity to meet a number of employees working at the company who was very approachable and I was able to ask them many questions about their roles.
The insight greatly helped me in understandiing the company culture as their values of safety, respect, one team, excellence and courage were expressed throughout the different activities conducted. All the activites were ran safely and the group activities in the morning enabled me to develop my team work skills.
The content of the day was very useful in helping me to decide my future career path as the activites undertaken enabled me to gain a good insight into what working for the petrochemical industry would be like. It also enabled me to find out what it would be like to work for a large organisation and decide whether this would be something I would enjoy.
Everything Else
For the insight day we were given the opportunity to have our travel and accommodation expenses reimbursed. As I live in a london borough I was easily able to catch the train in the morning of the insight day and so did not require accommodation for the night before. We had to submit the form within 30 days of the event and I am currently waiting to receive the money.
Throughout the day there were many opportunities for networking and meeting out employees of the company. In the morning we met with a senior engineer in the company and were able to ask him questions on what his role entailed. We were also able to network with three employees undetaking their year in industry with the company and also spoke to other employees at a networking lunch.
The networking event opportunities were very interesting and enjoyable. The networking lunch enabled me to speak to three different employees working in different sectors of the company, giving me a insight into the different job opportunities. I would have like longer at this event as I would have like to have been able to speak to more people.
During the day I was able to ask employees questions during question and answer sessions and the networking lunch. However, there was not a session explicitly dedicated to finding out about the different activities employees can get involved in outside of work which would have been interesting to find out about.
I would definitiely recommend this insight day to a friend as I was given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what it would be like to be employed by BP and what it would be like to work in the petrochemical industry. The day was very well structured and I was able to visit different aspects of the company.
